Road pedals on a cycle cross

Hi All

Just bought a cycle cross bike to switch up my training. I am a triathlete so spend 100% time on my TT bike.

Is it normal to use road pedals on the cycle cross bike? I want to avoid buying mountain bike shoes if I can.

Thanks

Probably not normal if used as a cyclocross bike - have you seen the amount of running they do.!?

Can't see any issues if used primarily on the road though.

If you're not putting your foot/feet down or walking/running on you cleats, i see no reason why not. It's going to be skills session like no other though if you're into cleat-preservation and a good few Youtube moments

Depends what type of riding you will be doing???

If it gets technical, then you will need MTB pedals n shoes

If it's tarr n gravel, road shoes will be fine.

You can put any pedal on your bike. Road, mtb, flatpedals. Try the road pedals and see if it suits your needs. Just remember that the cleats don't make for easy walking.

Right in the beginning of mtb in this country we didn't have mtb pedals yet. So we used road pedals and shoes. And man, did I stuff those shoes up. But we had great fun

Remember road cleats don't shed dust and grime as easily as MTB cleats and tend to get clogged up when dusty and damp. You'll only find out when you get to that emergency stop.

If you can afford a nice new CX bike you can afford a proper set of pedals ;)

Just pick up a pair of cheap SPDs and shoes, MTB pedals shred dirt and the cleats have some float which is ideal when riding off road, even on gravel.
