Ok, the update.

Not good news I’m afraid.

I went for the Merina big nine 500 in the link above. Went to see the bike, drove it around the block. Very excited I paid and was on my way home. Came back home in the dark.

Today after work I rushed to the bike shop, got a helmet, a pump, gloves ect and rushed home.

I put the old pedals on and off I went. I drove about ten km, the bike felt good, but almost felt unstable. When I stopped dead at a stop street and wanted to set off again, the bike made a horrible noise and did not want to turn right or left.

I got off the bike and tried by hand, it turned, but very difficult and made a loud scratching noise, sounds like a bearing thats buggred!

So, no phone on me, I pushed the bike about 5km to the bike shop, not wanting to damage anything more than it is already damaged!

Spoke to the guy there, Gert, very kind. He said it sounds like a bearing in the headset and if I bring it tomorrow he will open everything up and have a look.

So. In summary, maby I should have bought new!

You guys have any idea what the damage might be?

Headset service  normally about R80-R100, don't normally need new bearings. Might even just have came loose and fork rubbing on frame .  You can always just open up yourself and check what going on, just search on youtube, LOTS of howtos.

Thanks. I’ll have a look now that I’ve calmed down

It's a great looking bike! Yeah no something that should not have gone, but so be it. A full service could be upwards of 2k if chains and cables and pads need changing. It doesn't sting too much one at a time but some people just don't maintain things as well as others!

Congrats on the purchase and many miles rubber side down!

Should be easy enough to sort out if it is just the bearings, and not too expensive.

Even if it is something more complicated there will almost certainly be someone here that will be willing and able to help you out.

Don't panic yet.

I have the Momsem, not a bad bike for what you are paying (although shop around, I have seen it a bit cheaper than R8500).

Just note with that Momsen, its NOT a tapered headtube (if you are looking at 2018 AL129). That caught me out as it LOOKS like one!

Don't worry, there is nothing a tapered headset does that a normal straight headset can't do

Got the bike back Saturday afternoon at 1.

Gert, the very very kind man at mh LBS sorted the headset out at a total cost of R236 which is not bad at all. The guy is very friendly and really knows what he is doing.

It was raining the rest of the day. Went to the cricket this morning, I wish I didn't, and when I came back I only had enough time for an hour ride, but it was sooooo much fun and the bike drove like a dream!

Thabks for all the advice guys, I can see myself falling for this sport

In cycling it's not if but when, especially if you going off road.

Hi guys and girls.

Another update

I’ve done 520km since the repair of the headset. About 300km ago I had to replace the cassette and the chain. That was about R1500 with a major service.

Today, a new problem arised! Started hearding a ‘cruching’ sound whilst peadling. Stopped and checked if the chain wasn’t rubbing anywhere, could not see anything. Did another 30km before a massive lightning storm came out of nowhere. Started heading home, the cruching sound got worse and then it was like the chain was getting stuck in the front derailleur. I had to back pedal before I could pedal again. This happened about three or four times before my wife picked me up with the car.

I was very muddy, and I thought that this might be the problem. Once the storm passed, I washed the bike, in the dark, but the noise is still there when I pedal the bike on the stand or on the wall mount. Can’t see the chain catching anywhere on the front derailleur at all. Any ideas what this might be?

I’m planning a 70km ride on Wednesday so I must have It sorted by then.

Must say that I am very angry with myself for not buying a new bike, since it has been problem after problem after problem. I could have purchased a brand new big Nine 500 with the money that has gone into this by now, and I’ll probably have to spend again. Any help will be appreciated.

could be the front chain rings or bb bearing

Did not think it necessary to create a new thread and seeing how this one is dead...

Ive got a question for anyone who knows anything about frames. Im looking to start a rebuilding project and ive found some decent options on the net.

1st option is a 1994? Cannondale 2.8 R111(R900)from what i can gather on the net, with a shimano 105 8x2 groupset.

2nd is a 2005 scott speedster S6 with a shimano Sora 8x3 groupset.

Cant decide between the two as they are both in immaculate condition and will cost me 2k to acquire. Any advice on which frame could be the better investment woudld be highly appreciated.
