Max survives Epic 2018 "acute subendocardial myocardial infarction" aka heart attack.........Isabelle, my wife says the good thing about all this is now she knows I have a heart. Spent 5 days in ICU and prognosis going forward should be really good - I go for a series of tests this week which will determine the way forward.

Spent so long planning that Mercer bike, cant believe what happened to me - a healthy 51 year old dude. Paul, my Epic partner was with me at the time and managed the situation and got me into hospital asap - which probably saved me. Typical male endurance mnt biker response to all this when it goes down - Paul and I assessed the situation at the time of the heart attack and after a 10 minute discussion we put it down to a Spur breakfast/heartburn and that our course of action was to push on to Robertson in the hunt for water and rennies!

Looks like I will take a slow build from here and get a normal bike & use Scelerat for special events. Thanks all for the wishes and good vibes - blessed....... Paul finished the Epic as an IF on his steel Cotic and proudly joined the pride of lions - Amabubesi club. And as a good friend and fellow heart attack survivor Craig Price mentioned when seeing me back in McGregor walking the ridgebacks - "Max, from now it's flat out"!!

PS that photo was taken at the prologue on table mountain (u can see my gum guard hanging from helmet strap) .....felt good at the time and then bang

Isabelle thinks Munga 2017 caused the heart attack - she wont allow me to go back to Munga on Scelerat ever again, even if I bought her another horse

Do you know what the cause of the HA was?

Question coming from an endurance fit 53 yr old

Good luck with your recovery and return to fitness

She could be right. The race distance and rough roads make it a tough race but from a health perspective the heat is the real concern.

we similar ages, turning 52 in August. Excellent BMI & I don't drink or smoke. Mine was rather a freakish set of circumstances that caused it - could happen to anyone of us mnt bike endurance dudes. Keep an eye on your HDL & LDL cholesterol plus do a ApoB & ApoA1 ratio test - very new way of looking at cholesterol risk. Take care
