On the subject of drink driving. I had to blow yesterday in Gordon's bay at 2pm. They use a little device not much bigger than a cellphone. If there's any trace you get out and blow again into the goodie with the pipe.

If you are over you blow again. But that involves you and a guy in polsmoor named bubba.

Don't do it! Uber is cheap. Castle make that zero alcohol beer. Have a designated driver. Etc etc etc.

This topic was discussed at lenght not too long ago and if I remember correctly also after some tragic accident/hit-and-run incident.  It has been discussed many time and normally at some point in time falls into a downward spiral of stupid remarks.

What you have addressed is not invalid but there has been a fairly good discussion on this on the thread I posted above and lots of good opinions and suggestions came.  That thread also eventually died, but it might be a good read for you as you are new on the hub.

As mentioned in my OP, I am sure the subject was discussed before.

My reasoning for the vent/rant was from some of the comments that I read about the alcohol limit and not the actual issue of cyclists being run down. Some seem to believe that people will stop drinking and driving if the legal limit is zero. The point I was trying to make is that making something more illegal than it already is wont change that people are breaking the law anyway.

Admittedly, my frustration turned into a ramble, that was my mistake.

Thank you for the link, I shall read it in its entirety.

And I fully agree with alcohol limit.  The police can't catch and/or prosecute drunk drivers that goes over the current limit.  That will not change dropping the limit.  You need a proper police force and court system to deal with it swiftly.  Living in Germany opened my eyes wrt the effects of a proper law enforcement agency.  That is why here 3000 people die on German roads and in SA it is between 16000-18000.

I agree with you but it will be a hard sell as even in places like Mossel Bay, that's relatively quiet, the earliest the pubs clubs close is 2am. And those that host small bands only start the shows at around 9pm. Those pubs and clubs will say that they need the revenue that it generates and that it allows the small bands get the name they need to become well known bands. Sadly as others have pointed out SA is far too much of a me first society.

I understand that..have never understood why these holiday towns/establishments don't offer shuttle services..

Mossel Bay has three different taxi services besides the ubiquitous Uber. And these are well marketed. But ja I quite agree that these pubs clubs should actively promote responsibility with drinking habits such as making use of taxi services if you're going to go on a bender.

That said it doesn't absolve individuals of the need to think for themselves and to take responsibility for themselves. If you're going out intending to get drunk make use of a taxi or have a non-drinker as the designated driver. If you the money for drinking then surely you have the money for a taxi there and back. Or at least that's my view.
