Sram Guide RSC vs Shimano XTR

My biggest issue with shimano brakes is modulation - there isn't any ! I would sacrifice a few grams for a brake that I can control.

My experience with various sets of Shimano brakes is that they have mega power, but with little control.

Not really what the OP is asking, but I'll just toss it out there anyway

Are they a direct comparison?

One is a trail brake, the other is a race brake.

If I was riding big trails on a heavy enduro rig I would stick with the SRAM option. If it's a race bike (I assume it is as you are worried about weight not stopping power) then get the XTR's because the SRAM's are overkill.

Parts for different spheres of the sport.

Both will stop you, one will just stop you with a bit more finesse more often. One looks cool and weighs less.

I tried fancy brakes and went back to the older gen SLX with 203 and 185 rotors on the trail bike. Easy to bleed, easy to find a bite point and they modulate just fine. Maybe I'm lucky.

If you are an average MTBer, get the set that is easy and cheap to service. Most brakes, whether they are SRAM or Shimano, have more than enough stopping power for the average MTBer.

If you are a racer, then it is a different ball game. Try what works best for you, and sometimes racers don't have a choice anyway, since their equipment is sponsored.

Maybe it's because I'm ham fisted and used to carrying 25L drums with my braking fingers, but I don't have an issue modulating my deore brakes.

I didn't like the previous gen LX brakes though.

Or maybe it's because I'm used to them and have identical brakes on both bikes?

I did struggle to Wheelie my mates bike with Formula cura brakes, but that might be because I'm not used to riding those brakes?

To the OP, the xtr brakes will be nice, and they will be light, but they might not be that much better than your guides, just different. The Guides are pretty good brakes. And it might just be The Itch that makes you want to upgrade.

When Buyer's Dissonance comes into play, it's easy to perceive something that's Different as Better, yet the change might not necessarily be For the Better.
