agreed, but for the strava stuff, you need a premium membership, and I don't see the value in that. The Garmin live segments are hamstrung by everything being Strava-based and not Garmin that i see no value in using the Garmin segments... that leaves me back at the straight average. which i see little value in...

Not much value out there for you boss [emoji23]

So maybe the value in premium membership is the live segments actually being useful for training and not just a straight average?

I spend a lot of time training on my own and i find chasing my virtual old self and the odd KOM rider very motivating, I have been able to push myself much harder on training rides than in the past. Seems to be much easier to push yourself to PB's on segments if you are measuring yourself against something tangible/achievable the whole time.

For group rides though I don't even bother, then it is just a distraction.

Agree 100% - segments make every training ride full of challenges, if you want.

You have a point... well, good thing it's a slow day at work then....  :whistling:

It can be motivating. I rode a couple of PB's on Saturday and then again on those same segments on Sunday...... But man do I feel my legs now   Two days back to back of pushing.

It's not the case for (Strava) live segments, there your ride is compared against a recorded ride as it happened ie the virtual rider also goes slower on climbs, faster on downhills, (maybe even stop to rest if the original oke or you did that when he/you recorded his ride) - far more useful than a straight average km/h

When using Stava segments, does it compare you to your own effort or to the general leaderboard, because that would just be plain useless for me; Im way to far behind those times.

And importantly do you have to have it connected to your phone, or does it store the data and work on the GPS only?

I dont mind going Strava premium, I just dont want the noise of everyone else's data.

You can choose (you do the setting on your Garmin device) - either your own PB, the fastest PB of the people you are following on Strava or the KOM. I think you can also do a % of the above ie 10% slower/faster than the segment time you are chasing (but I haven't tried that feature yet)

No connection needed to your phone.  It loads the segments when syncing the device over wifi.  I select the segments I want on Strava before hand (in my case on my commute routes normally) and then sync the device. Then most of the time I actually switch off the Strava Segments but the day I feel like chasing them I switch them on and put foot.

Sorry for the millions of questions, but I want to set this up and use one platform without having to jump between for different features.

So if I check an activity on Strava I see it lists segments that I rode on even though I havent created or starred them or anything, is there a way to exclude these auto selected items?

When I read up on the segments features it was explained that all your starred segments will be transferred as well as a number (I think it was 20) of other segments selected for you. These other segments are generated from a number of things like your riding patterns, how many other people star them, proximity to your other defined routes, traffic on those segments, etc.

The segments you marked as Starred Segments (the orange stars) will get transferred to you Garmin.  Not the rest.  The pic above is one of my activities.  I only marked the segments that I am interrested in.

Same here, I only had starred segments transferred on my Garmin. Maybe you can manually delete them off your device Ghost?

I haven't connected it to my Garmin as yet, I'm still trying to see if I can get the browser versions to look the way I like, but I do believe that only starred ones go across to the device.
I just really would like to have the web interface be neater too; Im not really into all the noise.
