ICE Tech Rotors - SLX????

I'm amazed by all this rotor shredding. I'm pretty sure I've replaced bikes before rotors!

 

I run normal steel rotors and sintered pads and have never hit the minimum wear thickness. I have seen a little blueing but never bending to the point that cannot be fixed with a rotor straightening tool.

 maybe you should run bigger disks but I also think you will have this issue with any make of disk you use.

From what I've understand, the primary reason Shimano had to introduce ICE Tech (rotors and brake pads) is because they have a problem keeping their brakes below the maximum operating temperature for the mineral oil they use in their systems.

 

Most other brands use normal brake fluid and does not have the same problem.

 

I also read somewhere, that there may be a temperature constraint with the magnesium calipers on the XTR brakes.

 

I.e. although the issue is probably less significant with SLX, I would suggest you use the correct rotors and pads with your Shimano system.

My rear XT rotor lasted exactly one year. Recently had to replace it. I was surprised, as I've never had to replace a rotor before. A mate is in the same position as well, also replacing a worn rear rotor after about a year of riding. I tried to replace with slx, but unfortunately struggled to find. It seems most shops only carry XT.
