i need to switch sides and rant abuot something quickly...

as a cyclist, i do my best to stick to the side of the road and as far away from motorists as possible - however, i've seen far too many ppl steer into the road, almost IN FRONT of cars...

i see it all the time and in my opinion, motorists have every right to throw their toys about this.  im not defending drivers here but obviously if youre going to ride in the middle of the road like ive seen LOTS of cyclists do, then expect passing cars to give you the finger because it can be really frustrating.

ive seen guys nearly get knocked off their bikes because of this - fair enough, drivers need to be careful, but if i see a cyclist riding along the side of the road ill expect him to stay there unless he HAS to move in front of me for whatever reason, in which case ill be able to forsee this anyway and slow down etc.

didnt wanna bring up an old smelly topic but saw it yesterday on the way home from wrk - two cyclists nearly got klapped by a taxi cause of this

no, i'm not finding fault with your post, but i often come across stories on the wires about cyclists being knocked over and post them here. however, as details are sketchy, it is hard to ascribe blame.

i know holy roller ;) didnt take offence - i guess we just need to continue bringing it up cause ppl seem to forget it - as u said, soimetimes cyclists are their OWN worst enemy

my ex was telling me the other night that she finally decided to go for a early morning ride with a certain east rand group. they were all over the road, and it's not the safest road to be on at that time of the morn.

It's a culture thing.

Here motorists believe they have more right to the road than anyone else. Where I have been working in Suriname  Pedestrians and cyclists  have the most rights to the to road.

What a pleasure to ride a bike in that culture.!

Ended up doing 3km of 'cyclocross' yesterday on the Delmas road thanks to cement mixer trucks that felt I didn't belong on the road

There's a nice cyclocross bike for sale on the hub.Should do the trick.

ShaunH and I have had this type of response from Tshwane council re placement of sign up cyclist awareness signs in Pta

I actually went and talked to a few guys in Delmas Wolverine, it's terrifying what there response were...

They will consider signs when a cyclist gets killed or ridden over...

Where I work we talk about preventative maintenance.

Does not seem to be the case with them...

We submitted placement areas to them (Tshwane)

The response is : those roads are busy why are cyclists on them.

Well duh

We know they are busy, we also know 100s of cyclists use them

ergo

Put up a sign

You'd think the logic is plain.

Shaun is fighting it at the top but we seem to be getting stonewalled

ALL South Africans think they own the road, not just motorists.  What has really hit me (pardon the pun) here in my first week in Holland is how tolerant the cyclists and motorists are of each other and road laws.  OK, bicycles get there own lanes which is great, but cars will wait for them when the road narrows and cyclists stop at red lights (CAN YOU BELEIVE THAT??!)

On the road in the car as well, people don't get upset in traffic (and beleive me it's bad out here!), they also don't jump red lights.

To be honest, I don't think putting up a sign in SA on a road will make any difference.  Do you honestly think it does make a difference or does it just make you feel empowered?
