Hi

Got a Momsen VIPA two with xt 8000 crankset running a 34T oval on a 1x setup, I would like to go 36t oval or round if need be but not sure if there is enough clearance on the frame.

Has anyone tried with this with success

Hi Warick - the original VIPA RACE was designed around a 2x Drivetrain ( which was 24/36T dual ring at the time ) and we later offered a dedicated 1x Chainstay ( the max chainring the frame could take with a 1x chainline is 34T ). Hope that helps.

21:08 on a Thursday evening. Very well done. Can't really ask for better customer service.

I currently run a 24/42T dual ring on my 2014 VIPA with (just) enough clearance. Busy upgrading to Eagle - replacing the whole crankset to DM and was hoping to run 36T oval chainring. Will the 34T max still apply?

in our experience yes - max is 34T --- before 1x12 we had 1x11 and the Kargo Pro Team were running a mix of 32t or 34t for their racing. The 36T would probably rub the chainstay.

Tx for the reply - although it's not what I wanted to hear...

I was remotely aware that you offered the 1x chainstay a couple of years ago, but I was not in a position to change then and so many of my friends have converted to 1x recently without issues that I've ignored this.

As I've got everything so I'll check to see if there is a possibility - hopefully I can exchange the chainring if not.

the 2x chainstay works fine as 1x, the 1x is just a different look and alot chunkier.

you cold always UPGRADE to the new ULTRA ... which is available next month

I wish I could - but it is something to work towards![emoji109]

I always find it very interesting that a 34t chain ring is fine for most of the top riders but the weekend warriors "run out of gears" with a 34t chain ring and "need" a 36t chain ring.

.... and this is why we still designed the NEW ULTRA with 2x and Front Derailleur compatibility --- it is easier to ride with the OPTION of 2x gearing ... not if you look at the tech numbers, if you actually ride and need a 24t Front - it is THERE, if need a 36T front - it is there ...

I think it would greatly depened on rear casette gearing range choice

Let me know if you have any joy with this. I am running a 34T oval at the main moment no problems, maybe a std 36T round not oval will fit

Whether it is 10-46 or 10-50, the only reason you are going bigger front ring is for top end speed on 34/10 ratio, pros don't run out of gears because their cadence is much higher than weekend warriors, rather than working on being able to sustain a higher cadence they look to increase the front chainring size so that they can grind a higher top end speed at a much lower cadence, nothing to do with a cassette ratio as both pros and weekenders are on the 10T

Would depened on the nature of the race and profile.

You don't need a 36 for climbing, so your argument does not wash, you need a 36 for when you are on the flat and need top end speed, so let's not kid ourselves that the profile/hills needs to be considered.

As you are the OP asking this question, what is your reason for wanting a bigger chainring? Am guessing to go faster or keep up on the flats, which you can do by training to increase and maintain a higher cadence.

Thanks for all the feedback on this thread - it's great to know that the brand I support actively engages with its customers!

I'm really happy with my bike and have decided to stick with my 2x for now for exactly this reason.

With respect to the bigger chainring it might be true that I don't train enough and like grinding gears, but surely there should be (some) room for personal preference. I never compared myself to a pro rider and definitely don't put the time in that they do, but I still enjoy what I do - in my own way. Also, I have just the one bike that I use for all kinds of rides, including road races where I've managed to continue pedaling at speeds exceeding 70km/hr.
