I am not looking forward to the cold, I have not got much insulation...

Lucky I packed lots of warm and dry stuff

Day 3 and 4 are now done, started in Knysna yesterday and rode via the Phantom pass road and to the Seven passes road. Some wonderful places and roads. Alton (a guy I met on the road) snapped a pic of me and posted it on the Cycle Knysna fb page and it just exploded with a bunch of comments and support. I also meet some friendly cyclists at the top of Phantom pass, and had a long chat to them before parting ways after a few pics. Stopped at the garden route trail park for lunch and a break, before continuing to Toorbos cabins for a goods nighrs rest (with electric blankets).

Then this morning I started early and rode the last 25 km to George, where I got a free lunch from the owner of the shell in town (Rob), and the LBS owner who is also a Rob is putting me up for the night. Thanks Rob's! Must be a Rob thing;)be8bd09497973eddfe0117b75c06bd15.jpg37b1574fe4933c164a3ef8842dbd4f36.jpg3c13750c6333c193e372c205aebe9a13.jpgd533e0b450cad2510829fe0dbe0b3133.jpg46d577402244901b00c3979e434621e1.jpg71d9b119f9a6539b80babd37b9884b56.jpg3599d3fc6c444097faba0439a78fab3e.jpg

This is awesome. I will happily sponsor you a burger and a beer when you get to stellenbosch. It will be worth it just to hear the stories. I want to do the same thing soon, on two wheels though.

You might need to fight my wife in Stellenbosch. She is already grumpy I have been away for 7 days so far

Day 5. Rob, my host for the evening, dropped my at the old toll house at the bottom of Montagu pass. Before long though the gradient of the pass was too much to ride, and I began my hiking practice again. Near the top the rain began to really come down, as well as the wind. Riding into Herold, I got blown off a few times. I had to stop as I could not feel my fingers. The tea garden in Herold was closed, but they still made me some hot chocolate and I warmed up by a fire. Carrying on I took a bit a detour to make the last stretch to Oudtshoorn a bit quicker. I pulled into a farm to ask for water, and the farmer informed me I had about 25km to go to town. I had already done 40 km, but thought I may as well push to town. The mud however was crazy, at times it built up so much the wheel would not turn. As chance would have it, about 15km from town, the farmer from earlier can passed and gave me a lift to the nearest pub in town, an offer I could not pass up.0e6bac60c19e928c1e571228bd6626cf.jpg1d791b11f82ca2c4f0cca2f545a8237f.jpga06aeec87896119d5912f83f4b6925fd.jpg9302c301a0f77c3c067b35de576e9eaa.jpg1b764ee7d9d0f7cbe73e0f75eb004b87.jpg7568df41e3a29c616166814f2a68eaa2.jpg

Day 6. Plans changed a bit. I was due to ride from Oudtshoorn to Calizdorp north of the R62 over two days. I was looking at the weather reports and the may be a lot of rain tomorrow, so I changed the route a bit and decided to ride to Calizdorp in one go via de Hoop which is a bit shorter, and then rest two days in town before tackling Rooiberg pass on Monday. All I can say is two big days in a row has really taken it out of me. The surrounding scenery is brilliant, but the riding itself is bland and soul destroying. Topical straight, flat karoo roads. Time for a bit of R&R8ad6e229a4446a7a40d9afe885606d86.jpgde33760d8933faf5d962f31b570d8996.jpgba26444ff49ad6890db331408235ade7.jpg79b1768add5fad3c62b390addc8d6f02.jpg

Never seen a unicycle with a brake, does it have a free hub as well?

Good luck tomorrow!

They have come a long way. Mine is fixed but you do get free wheel hubs that you can lock and unlock on the fly. You even get a two speed geared hub. They cost a ton and it's just more that could go wrong

How's today's ride going?

Lucky you are riding the Karoo during winter, summer on a unicycle in the karoo would be killer

Day 7, I took a rest day so no riding for me. Stayed over in Calizdorp at the train station. Had a great day with Dewald and Irma who I got in contact with through a motorcycle forum. The Klein Karoo is such a special place and has so much to offer5fd4edb12d416dfb26d5e288336bfd5f.jpg1beb4f2bd6e7457894c3f75f12cb664e.jpg9bd41c5eb7ee42b9c34504a98f65e20d.jpgf2a9eb5d0f088198cea2a04444cea685.jpg

Day 8, left Calizdorp in the mist. Saw nothing until I hit the bottom of Rooiberg pass. The climb was a very loose so landed up walking the crap bit. Had an awesome coffee stop at the top of the pass. Met a couple who were traveling around the Karoo, we chatted for ages and they got some nice snaps of me riding. The rest of the ride to Van Wyksdorp was pretty straight forward. There were children playing soccer as I came into town, they landed up running along side me as I made my way to the town centre. Another group of school children were busy singing the national anthem as I rode past. Not a bad way to make an entrance into town.b7f685c80bc94b9b503bdb8c7d6b6049.jpg691aaa03e9d63af9a215f4b148f2f4fd.jpg019b796b64b07122e5362255138d562e.jpg15bbb6bb8aeed896baef4188e53f4737.jpgadd30db2e84aaa767cc4b9527548bf76.jpg91b4891eb0ba0fc0670d8473252b52bf.jpgf6ede8831d2284c665af60e092e840e9.jpg

Day 9 marks half way roughly. I stayed with friends of Rob and Irene's in Van Wyksdorp, Ralph and Lynn/Linn (not sure on spelling). They have a super cool tequila shed, and if you are ever in the area, you need to pull on through. Started my ride at about 9 after a decent breakfast, the route was again typical of the Karoo, not to many hills, not a soul in sight and nothing much else. The route ran between the Rooiberg and Langeberg ranges so I at least had some epic views surrounding me. I find these sorts of rides the toughest though. I made it to the tar road that leads to Riverdale, this about 45km of riding. The tar road to town was another 25km, but there was nowhere really to camp or stay because I was far from about to push the last 25km, so I managed to hitch a lift in the back of a bakkie and skip the tar road, which did not have a proper yellow lane to cycle in. So a little bit of a cheat, but far safer.4ac866e9d1f8312886f598335d76a162.jpg093fc4099f0ac6584ed047fcf263d174.jpge96ae88f5d288f3e44e9999da62e39c9.jpg
