Hub advice for Rehab & Recovery - Broken Ankle

I am keen to get some insights from other Hubbers who have also had the misfortune of a broken ankle.

2 weeks ago I broke my fibula just above the ankle joint.  Surgery required a plate pinned down the side of the bone, various screws and a tightrope.  From what I google, seems to be a fairly routine (albeit FARKING sore) fix.  Surgery was just over a week ago.

Having been on my @ss for 2 weeks now on strict orders of continuous elevation  (5 more weeks to go in cast) I am going out of my mind.  I am told that there will be a further 2-3 months post cast with a moon boot.  Yay.

What have other hubbers done (while min-of-meer) obeying the recovery protocols? How do you (CAN you) do any sort of exercise? Post cast, what training did/could you do - for example, can you ride a power trainer?  What sort of muscular attrition did you experience, and how did you address this?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

first off i hope you heal well.I had a broken ankle and a similar op.The best advice I have is to take it slow and that rehab of the injury is crucial.you can immediately start with fisio to try and keep as much of the muscle of the leg so that when you start targeting the ankle the other muscles are still sort of there.I started with fisio 3 days after the op with the foot still in the cast, and I healed up completely with no left over issues from the op.

Ouch - sounds horrific.

I took 6 months off due to a serious bone injury and managed to get back to almost full strength.

Two pieces of advice from what I did wrong:

1. Listen and follow the advise from your physio strictly to make sure the muscles and joint get's back to best possible strength again - mine never healed fully due to massive damages to my hip but it still works ok to get by alright.  I didn't do what the phisio said and my muscles around the joint are still weak.

2.  You will get back to doing what you want if you persevere - I was told I would never run again - I do.  Was told at best I could ride a road bike - I still ride like crazy on my MTB.

Good luck, it will be a painful process when you eventually start again.  Took me 12 months until fully fit again.

I don't think one should overlook the age factor.

I could be wrong, but I dare say that I would have recovered better/fully/faster @ 20 than I am @ 40+. (albeit a different injury to OP)

Don't underestimate the importance of rest and don't rush things - listen to your body when you do get active.

Heal up soon.

tell me about age factor so agree with you plates and screws only way to recovery completely and get bones to heal up

You can train one legged on a trainer - there is crossover to the other leg and it will keep you in shape.

Other than that follow your surgeons instructions and timing on the broken ankles rehab - I broke mine as a schoolboy in much the same place - took months to stop limping a fraction when running.

Do as you have been told to do.

You do not want to mess with that bone healing up properly - if you put pressure on it too early you are in the ----. Once the bone has healed it's up to you how much effort you put in.
