Alternative to American Classic MTB RACE wheels.

Can anyone point tlme towards a comparable Wheelset? American classic has gone bang and so I don't think they will be supplying spares or the new Shimano style freehub for XTR M9100 for their existing wheels anytime soon. I want to upgrade my MTB to M9100 when it releases and will need a wheel/hub that will be compatible with their new freehub design.

29'er

Something 23mm-25mm internal width.

And in the 1500g or lighter region. (AC's are currently 1459g per pair)

The new XTR will only run on DT Swiss or Shimano hubs, so your options will be limited if that's where you want to go.

I know that's how it's looking so far. But I am hoping more manufacturers will get on board before or shortly after XTR hits the shelves. The other alternative is an XD driver with a sram cassette. Although I have a feeling there might be issues with the chain and cassette differences.

I think if nobody else but DT swiss comes to the party I may get myself a pair of XR1501's. Still about 100g heavier than my American Classic but I can't seem to find anything else that is not carbon and on the AC's level in terms of both weight and internal width.

Hi Alaistar, do you know if freewheel and spares are still available for the AC Wheels in general? Or is is just a time bomb waiting until the availability of spares becomes a reality.

I reckon you are screwed, you won’t find the equivalent. I have a pair of wide Lightning’s and I am currently at about the 6th stage of grief about ACs demise.

no idea. Don't know if the company that bought all of AC's assettes equipment and IP will resume production or not. But everything is out of stock on AC's website. I don't think I'll ever find a Wheelset as wide (24mm internal) and as light (1459g) for the price I paid. And I've had no complaints about durability. I've only had them trued once after burping my rear tire in a crazy corner last year. Nothing comes close. I don't know why they went bang in the first place. :(

Thanks for your reply... might be a safer option in the long run to have to look at a different wheelset then. Possibly Fulcrum or Rapide.

it's exactly what I was thinking. A pair of Fulcrum Red Passions would be a good alternative in terms of price performance a bit narrower. Will have to see what the future holds for the 2019 model year.
