Upgrade from Shimano 2x9 to Sram NX 1x12...

I currently have Shimano Alivio/Deore drivetrain with 38/24t chainrings and 12-36t cassette. I am looking for the simplicity of one chainring and have been looking at the upcoming SRAM NX 11-50t 12-speed option with 34t or 36t. I am a strong climber and do lots of technical riding. A granny gear is rarely used as it does not give enough momentum over rocks and I often spin out at the top end. I am leaning towards the 36t because it covers the same gear ratios as my current setup with minor differences. Being on a 27,5 wheeler does help though. Any thoughts and experiences on this is welcome.

My other considerations are:

1) Will I be able to mix Shimano crankset with just a Sram upgrade kit plus chainring or will I have to buy a new crankset as well?

2) Will I need new cables? My guess is my current ones could be too short for the smaller 11t cog.

Thanks.

hey man, couple answers for you

1 - It's always helpful to change cables and outers. Ensures that there are new and fresh shifting devices for you. It's at most a R 150 item that makes a huge difference to shifting quality. But you won't HAVE to, unless your current cables are a bit mangled. I'd change em anyway, though.

2 - yes, you'll be able to use your existing crank, just put the 36t where your current 38t is and you're A for Away. May just need to use a small spacer (washer) on the inside of the crank to allow for optimum chainline

3 - I'd honestly go for the Sunrace cassette over the NX one. It's lighter, shifts bloody nicely and is most likely cheaper as well. Then you just need the RD, shifter & chainring, which you can get from Rapide / Lyne.

4 - If you go sunrace 11-50, you can get the 11sp version which is also likely to be cheaper than the newest 12sp NX offerings, and you can get it now.

5 - 36t at the front sounds good, if you're a strong climber and pair it with the 11-50.

i'm on a Trance 27.5 and late last year went (as Myles said) 1x11 which was and is cheaper than going 1x12-

so i have a Sram GX shifter, Sram NX rear derailleur and a 34 oval Rapide chain ring and same cranks- cables are new and the outers were fine.

my cassette is a Sunrace 11-50.

i have just enough range on climbing and on those long gravel roads to cover the riding that i do and i am very happy with having gone 1x11 and with Sram (always had Shimano before)

on those long roads a 36 would be nice but for me a granny is also nice when needed sometimes.....

Wayne at Rapide helped me out with all the above and his advice and service was superb as always.

i also added a tiny chain guide to the 34 which a guy on the Hub designed and made for me.

just my 2 cents as I've looking at it.

The 1x11 options are way cheaper than 1x12 and as far as i can tell on most cassette the difference is having a 18 instead of a 17+19, so this is really not critical i think.

@scubes, dare to share infos on that chain guide and put photos?

Seems like CWC has specials on Shimano XT 1x11 upgrade kits for super cheap. Thanks for advice ????????

Will look at the sunrace option too, they look so nice. The red will fit in nicely with the colours of my bike too.

I struggle to find the NX 11-speed deraileur, which has enough room for 50t. Checked on Rapide, CWC, Buycycle, Bike-addict, Evobikes. Where else?

You won't find one. NX is max rated at 42T. However, it can run a 50T easily.

Only NX Eagle is rated to 50T.
