Just stay of the tar roads, they drive like holigans and the road are very narrow, ride in the sugar cane fields.

BTW the centre outside Flicflac was being renovated so no bike hire best to contact

We just got back from Mauritius a month ago.  We took our gravel bikes with us and rode daily as we were training for a 100 miler.  We found the exact opposite - cars were incredibly patient and courteous, and we actually felt safer cycling there than we do at home!!

The roads are narrow, but the drivers (without exception) wait until it is safe to pass you with adequate space between the car and you.

 

We also rode in the sugar cane fields and actually had more run ins with stray dogs there than with cars on the road haha!
