I am looking for an entry level road bike. So far I have 2 options:

1) Raleigh RC2000 with shimano sora gearset. 8 gears at the back and 3 at the front.

2) Focus Variado with Shimano Tiagra gearset. 9 gears at the back and 3 at the front.

I am new to cycling and have learnt that a 9 speed is better, however I haven't heard about a Focus bike before.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Both are my size and in my budget.

What is your budget? How tall are you? I would opt for at least a 10 or 11spd grouset with a compact crankset which has 50/34 teeth. A triple chainring is outdated and finding spares might be an issue especially with ergo levers and deraileurs. Best money ever spent is getting a proper bike fit before buying. Unless you can splurge ever so often on a new bike best to spend money wisely first time.

Hi there

Why not go the traditional route Steel > Alu> Carbon?

Steel for strength ,Alu for endurance and Carbon for speed.

That way you learn more about the bike and it's components when you start to notice its limitations. I Learnt a lot about the inner workings of a bike because I could assemble and disassemble my vintage 6speed(first ever road bike), all Invaluable information and only a serious mechanical failure can stop me now. I rode that bike enough to justify upgrading to Aluminium. When I ride my aluminium enough to justify upgrading to Carbon I will do so but not before.

***It's very easy to waste money in this sport.***

Start small and build yourself up from the ground, you won't regret it.

You have it the wrong way round...... its alu, carbon, steel.

Start with alu hopping to be a great racing snake. Relise that you are not, and cant perform like the “pros”, but then you blame the bike. So you buy carbon. This will be the solution. Couple of years pass and you realize that you are nothing better than any midfielder so you by a nice comfortable steel bike to just ride your bike and enjoy it.

This has been my story exactly. A long and somewhat expensive journey, but worth it in the end.
