only problem with the cheap shimanos is that when one has stepped in a pile of mud...it takes about 10 pedalstrokes to get the cleat in....and then once it is in' date=' it takes some preplanning to get it out again!!!

My fav pedals are still my original '93 Shimanos....the entry level ones. Nicer than my XTRs evenTried Time on a buddy's bike and they were very niceIncidentally know of someone selling a pair of almost new Time Atac Carbons for R1500. They were R2500 new I think and they were used once

You can have my new Time Atac carbons and cleats - used once (bit scratched) for R1300.

I had a LOOK (no punn intended) at the Quartz on the LOOK website and they do LOOK kinda sexy. Its a stupid extra expense, but they do LOOK the part. Having said that, i will consider pedals that will make it easier to clip/unclip in heavy muddy conditions. The "cleat cleaning routine" one get's into with the 520s is becoming irritating. I'm sick of pulling a "Naas Botha" looking for a dry patch everytime.

Ok, this I don't understand. You only bought these pedals 2wks ago! Just how many times have you ridden them since then? If this is your 1st attempt at clipless pedals on a mtb, you really need to give them a bit of a chance.

If you're finding the pedals to tight (difficult to unclip), then just loosen them. Not sure where on the Time pedals, but there should be a small adjuster screw on each pedal.

i have read they have spindle problems

KCensoredK!!!!

there have been very few incidents of spindle failure - 6 to be exact in South Africa

The main cause has been BIG crashes

woa ....... lets get something sorted ...i said i have read, not "my opinion"

I have not yet been on a mtn bike in real mtn bike conditions (i.e only been on the tar and pavements on my block)

What I want to know is how difficult is it to clip into and out off eggbeaters?

and

what advantages/disadvantages are there between eggbeaters, candy and smarty ?

There is an ajuster and I have set it on loosest setting. Maybe the cleats need to wear in a bit and it may make exit a bit easier. I am using eggbeaters now and find them much easier to get in and out of in tight spots. I have'nt given up on clipless!

Cool, I've only used Shimano m520s, so can't really comment.

All Crank Brothers pedals can "clipped into" in 3 ways -

slide the cleat forewards over the pedal, slide the cleat backwards or just push the cleat downwards on the wings.

to "clip out" simply twist your foot away from the bike - same as most pedals

the are different quality levels in the range - indicated by the letter or number after the model type.

e.g Eggbeater C,  Candy 4Ti etc

within the same level of pedal, the advantage of the eggbeater of a Candy is a weight saving of a few grams - between 15 and 30grams

within the same level of pedal, the advantage of the Candy over the Eggbeater is more conatact area between shoe and pedal body.

the Smarty is a the entry level to the Candy range of pedals

Shamus' date=' when are you having a "test day" to try and convince the rest of us die-hard SPD fans to use your products?

no need Mampara

GoLefty is doing a very detailed and critical extended test on the new Eggbeater S

(he had the previous version which he was extremely unhappy with)

Shamus, which forums?

What are the advantages off the eggbeaters sl over the candy sl (or the is it the other way round) ?

In my riding, weight of things is not to much of an issue. it must be more about function (with a tiny bit of bling, Mr RacerT does have some blue already Smile)

That will not convince me. What is good for some is not good for others. Unless I try myself, I'm not convince.

Just because a car is voted car of the year by some panel does not make it likable by others.
