jmulder01 Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Will an older long cage Shimano XT M786 Shadow+ 10 derailleur work with 1x11 setup.Idea is to go 1x11 -> 11-46 cassetteAs I see it, the shifter determines the shifting ratio.So if combined with new XT 11 SPD shifter would this setup be reliable?

The derailleur's "lever arm" length has a direct effect on its function and how far the cage will move per mm that the cable is moved. Increase / decrease that lever arm length, and your RD travel changes. If they're compatible, it will work. If the pull ratio is the same, then it'll work.

Skinnyone Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Thank you for all the info.Parts are on their way except chain.Another question, how many chain links will this 11-46 Cassette with 34T at the front require.Could you recommend a chain for this conversion?Chain length is dependent on the bike - a HT will commonly use a slightly shorter chain than a long travel full sus...order a 116link chain and cut to suit - there are a number of different "formulas" for it but I have never had an issue where you go big front and big rear - not going thru the derailleur and then overlap by 2 links... As far as chain brand goes - get Shimano if you are running the rest Shimano - it will just work better
