I totally agree with johan. you should rather change front. i've gone through 3 sets of pads on my front and the rear ones aren't even worn half way. I never use my rear brake for braking, just use it for control every now and then.

Thats why on most bikes you have a bigger rotor in the front for more stopping power and just a small one on the rear.

 

changing one brake on a bike doesn't look that great to me but if you're ok with it then rather put a disk on the front with a 180 mm rotor for more stopping power. I weigh 104kg and my brakes work perfectly, magura julie front and rear with 180mm front and 160mm rear rotors. with good brake pads i'm still capable of lifting the back slightly even on gravel roads.

 

you can also try and get some high quality brakepads before you switch to disks. don't know v-brakes that good but different quality pads on my disks makes a HUGE difference!!

Insofar stopping ability goes, there is no difference between V-brakes or discs.  The difference comes in feel, sacrificial contact surfaces, adjustment etc etc.

 

With a V-brake you can still do an endo, which means there's enough stopping power. However, bad pads make a big difference to your V -brake experience. Poor pads pick up aluminium, make grating sounds and melt on long descends.

 

Good pads such as Koolstop Salmon won't pick up aluminium, won't eat the rim and provide excellent stopping.

 

Disc brakes weren't developed to stop better but to provide less maintenance, provide a better feel and theoretically allow you to drag the brake without any ill effect.

yea i was considering to upgrade mine as well but after reading the posts here have decided against it !!! and the money it would cost to upgrade is also a bit steep !!! avid juicy 3's r1300 per wheel !!! my mtb only cost r3200 a few years ago so i will just stick to my single diget avid's and upgrade the brake pads.

 

who want to stop anyway Wink

Hagar, What have u upgrded on your bike, What would you say is the more important things/componants to look at when your starting to get serious on the mtb?

i would say wheels and maybe the front shock . I did my wheels a few months ago and we wnt on a group ride where there were plenty thorns and those riding with tubes and slime all changed tubes but those with tubless just carried on.

 

so i my opinion it would be the wheels and the fork but my offroad knowledge is limited at this stage hence me asking about the Thorn removal EmbarrassedEmbarrassed

maybe the groupset ??? i got the deore XT and am happy with it not top of the range average i would say but dont have problems with my gears so they are fine for me.

some good V brake pads are the Rav-x triple compuon and the BBB triple compound raced and won a few times last year

 

on V brakes so you dont really need disks if your V brakes are set up right

i got the ravex ones on my bike now the lbs put them on after my service i think they are a redish color they seem to work better than the ones that were on my bike . next time i want to try those bbb ones !!!
