Hi

I am looking to Purchase a bike for my son and he has seen a Ghost that he is keen on. I don't know this brand at all though. Any advise would be most appreciated as i can't seem to find any sales pricing for this brand on line locally either. Regards Warenn

Ballistic Bike Trading were the Ghost agents. They have a website. At one stage they sold directly from their showroom near Honeydew, but I haven't been there for a few years.

I liked the bikes, I thought they looked great and handled well (mine was a 26in RT7500). Sadly though I managed to break 2 frames under 6 months....both in exactly the same place, they both broke on the rear chain stay where there is a lug for a cable guide...

And no...it wasn't my riding skills as I bought a Trance X1 after the Ghost got spirited away by the insurers and the Trance was ridden exactly the same in the same areas....!

My friend also had a Ghost (a carbon one this time) and he broke a frame but had it replaced and the bike still lives on with his nephew now after many years and many rides...he has now downgraded to a Specialised....(haha!)

I had no problem getting the frame replaced and there were no issues, it took under 2 weeks(if I remember Germany was having snow storms so this delayed everything due to closures)...but after the second break in the same place I called it quits on this brand...( I still had to pay for a new pressfit BB as they said they couldn't swop the other one and was still charged to have the parts changed over, that kinda left a bad taste in my mouth as the bike was still new basically..but ja)

As CAAD mentioned BBT was based in Honey Dew, I think a guy called Jason was the owner there...I think they also used to sponsor Max Knox at one stage?

I bought a second hand Ghost Lector 2978 ( full carbon ) When started up again . It had rebuilt and everything was working 100% . I had two bad falls in 6 months and the frame was not damaged but then started to creak /squeak badly . On inspection i found that the bottom swing arm bearing housing in the frame had hairline cracks in it . I think for a first bike stay away from carbon go aluminium and go with a better supported brand . By the way i still ride the Ghost but with road slicks and only on road .  My MTB  is a Silverback aluminium frame .

I wouldn't tell anyone entering the market to avoid carbon. If you do proper research and understand the decision and product you decide on, it could work out perfectly. My first serious bike after a makro bike was a carbon dual sus - 5 years down the line and I've never had the urge to replace it, I simply love it.

What did work in my favour was exactly what FirstV8 said that a supported brand may be a smarter option (extents of reliability predominantly) and make sure that the bike is suitable for the riding it will be used for i.e. not a cross country bike for downhill or jumps, or not a downhill bike for a lot of climbing (because geometry, suspension travel, possibly no suspension lockouts)! You can't easily go wrong with an alu frame, but you may come across a reliable carbon frame that would've been more fun!

Feel free to ask about specific bikes or applications, there are many knowledgeable members on bikehub that could provide insight on specific bike models, like FirstV8 also did.

Lastly, hope you find an amazing deal and a bike that your son loves. Good luck :)
