Is this bike worth investing in?

If that is a 2001 Colnago they are starting to attract some interest as a classic.  It was one of the first frames to use tubes that were shaped. The collectors want bikes with original spec parts so whatever is still working leave it be.  Those wheels are not original so do what you need to with them.  Seat post will probably need to be cut out.  Time care and patience.

Had an expert assess the bike for some help.

As a result, have ordered new fork, new tyres, new. chain, new bars, new saddle, new bottle cages, new brakes and matt black paint. He says the frame and groupset is absolutely worth saving.

Velo Ecosse is a bike shop in Edinburgh. I remember them well. Their house brand bikes like many other shop brands bikes in the UK and Europe were made by a factory in Italy called AutoStrade IIRC. I had a similar frame.

The god thing about those frames is that you can probably get a 24C or maybe a 25C tyre in with a 17mm to 19m rim.

If you are looking for a modern wheelset you will be limited so do your shopping carefully.

BB shells were a bit of a nightmare with those bikes because some were sold with Campagnolo groupsets and therefore had Italian thread BB's. Others that shipped with Shimano had std BSA thread BB's

the forks used were also a little tight for clearance so even a 25C on a 19mm rim could be challenging.

If you happy to live with 23C tyres then keep it. The frames are very solid and well made.

IF you want to move onto more modern wheel standards i.e. 22-24mm rims and 25C tyres then you'll need a new frame and fork
