Strange..thought I did post the pic.

Ag I realise this last rant was written in anger/frustration (I see you can't delete posts haha...now I know)

Having slept on it I know there is actually no point to it

Not sure what I was trying to achieve

Please ignore

On to the next

Cheers

Wheelie, can you tell us if the conical washers (the silver bits under the bolt) were above or below the caliper on the other end? If they were above, no worries. If they were below, then there's a good chance that that was the source of the failure as the washers need to be on the same side of the caliper in order to prevent the caliper mounting arms from being at an angle to the mounts themselves.

IE: If you try to torque down a straight bar down to a mount that is uneven (not parallel to the mounting points) then there's going to be stress on the mounting arm.

I'm not sure -  I can't remember and from that one pic I took I can't really see.

Will definitely keep this in mind when fitting the replacement caliper. Thank you.

So I'm home mechanicing now with a mate who has way more tools and skill than I have..but still not enough it proved last night. Haha. At least the beer was lekker.

Couldn't get mineral oil in time and apparently need one more thingy for the hose. So the brake is on hold until we get those. Considering using Castrol LHM+ instead (read on an old post here somewhere it works just as well)

I have a 2x10 with 11/42 cassette so I bought a 30t NW chainring to go 1x (my current big chainring has gaps in its teeth bigger than most in the Cape and want anyway want to go 1x) we couldn't get the crank off as the crank puller was to narrow...apparently need a ccp 44 although a mate suggested using a rubber mallet.

Had a few things planned - I gave the horse a proper wash before so at least I have a clean bike now.

Eish, welcome to the wonderful world of bicycles and the love/hate of the LBS. It is a long and tough road, in my experience and you can never tell when treachery will prevail. The same main peanut, very well known Durban bike shop, sold me the wrong size bicycle, assuring me it was on "special" but I soon found it was a ripoff, but later sold me very good entry level shoes (I just went in for a price). Another well known Durban shop back in the day sold me a ladies saddle, also on "special". Took a lot of pain to find that one out - the sticker was small. Never went back.

But I've had consistent outstanding service from the Minnaar shop in Pmb, Spez in Waterfall (Spez in Somerset West; horrible) and Good2Go; Jason a stand out (all the best). Solomons and Cyclesphere ok. The other 5 or 10 I've frequented over 20 years; meh. Mostly expensive bullsh!tters.

Good luck getting help at Spez in waterfall, the owner jumped ship and left without telling anyone...

Their head mechanic now has opened his own service shop, Bike Works in Winston Park.
