Rear Hub - Advice on buying a new one

What hub is fitted?

I have the big nine XT edition and it has a shimano hub(not XT) and I recently had to change the freehub. What happened to me was intermittent. I would stop pedaling and the freehub would carry on(almost like I was fixed gear) and my derailleur would start to wind up. Luckily each time it happened I would quickly start peddling again. My LBS said that they don't last and do need to be replaced. I replaced it but TBH would rather just get a better quality hub next time if it happens again.

I had this happen to me too. I get so annoyed by bike manufacturers who sell you a great bike with less than great components, knowing full well that if you do not upgrade components at exorbitant cost, it will bite you in the ass somewhere down range. (not everyone can afford the top the range carbon bike-rover)

Why is it that every time one ends up at the LBS, the stock response is that it is a inferior part that needs regular replacement, but for gazillions of Randela's, here is the latest and greatest thingamabob that will end world hunger and put more bums on seats...a.k.a. the part you are in dire need of if all you want is to keep pedaling?
