Can I turn normal mtb crank into x1 crank

YES, in many cases a 2x or even a 3x can be converted to a 1x.

 

 

With the Trek Fuel EX5 bike the front blades were removed and a 1x blade was bolted on.

Some kind Hubbers were (not so) diplomatic in pointing out this looked cr@p .... but hey, this is what some of these conversions look like ...

 

 

the fun starts if this simple approach leaves you with a blade that is off set to one side .... with any luck it is a matter of spacers to resolve the issue

A bashgaurd will be ideal if thats what you like. Alternatively you can mess with peoples minds and leave the bigger outer ring on as a bash gaurd.

Or one could cut of the tabs for the bigger chainring and round everything off to mess with people even more
