You are quite right Slowpoke.  This is not the first time that cars would overtake when I am approaching.  It needles to say it absolutely infuriates me when this happens and often I felt like lobbing something at the car.  But at the same time it is not safe in most cases.  I need to save my @ss first before anything else and this happens in milliseconds.

This time I had the bottle in my hand and once again had to save my rearend first, therefor having to dump the bottle.  I just made sure that my bottle did not get dumped in vain.

THe irony was that he stopped to see if he can "retrieve" his mirror.  There was nothing to pickup but a few hundred pieces of plastic and glass.  So I asked him what happened to the part of waiting for oncomming traffic to pass before you pass a vehicle.  His response was that there was enough space.  So I asked him then where is his mirror.  There was just silence.

backlash, I agree (concur) with you.  I think the road regulations instructing cyclists to cycle single file contradicts the spirit of the regulation which gives all vehicles the claim to the entire lane.  If cycling abreast will improve safety, I will do it.ClapClap

My mate was in that situation once - oncoming car overtaking - he was opening his energy gel at the time (Corn Syrup in those days) and lobbed it at the windscreen of the oncoming car while taking evasive action.

Did you know that Corn Syrup can virtually bring windscreen wipers to a halt...

Glad you're okay Bateleur1. Personally, I'm with those that ride two abreast if it's safe to do so for this very reason...

Well done BateleurClap Even if some people had the bottle in their hands, they might not have the balls to do it, so good on you. What car was it? I would like to go to one of their "owners club" websites and see if they posted that they were thrown with a water bottle. The chances are min, but it would be nice to respond...and embarrass him.

Time to fill my spare water bottle with cementLOL

Hope the bottle is ok.

Nope' date=' bottel burst from the top down to the middel.  I already battle to find 1 litre bottles and now my favourate bottle is gone Cry

What car was it?

Not sure actually.  I think it was an older model Ford Focus or something.

don't know so lekker about throwing things at cars. What if the driver just decides to turn around and take you out? Ya, it would be nive, I thought a cO2 bomb into the soft side panelling might be good. But stuff at windscreens might be looking for trouble.

i started losing a bottle a day when i used to commute to work. i would get so peeved at the interesection of cumberland and allum at the bottom of kensington. drivers from the other side would always try jump the intersection after the flicker for them had stopped.

eventually i stopped tossing the bottles, and instead would ride past the driver who i'd caused to stop suddenly in the middle of the intersection. by this stage he/she would have rolled down their window to remonstrate with me, and i would ride up to them and squirt them in the face with the contents of my bottle. there was no way for them to get back around the intersection to catch me after that.

Nice to see you back again Cervelo.

Yes I agree and I don't think this would become a habbit as such.  But I must admit, for the rest of my 30 km ride I was constantly looking over my shoulder to see if there were any surprise attacks.
