Getting back into MTB after many years. Im a weekend trail rider, nothing serious. Would like to get a hardtail for budget and maintenance reasons.

These are the 2 bikes I'm leaning towards. R12k to 13K region. Trek Stache 5 (2018) on sale at the moment. Silverback Slade Comp 2019 which is apparently landing in bike shops in SA end of October

Any advice would be helpful. I understand one of these bikes no one would have seen and is based purely on specs.

Trek at that price point offers more bike for the money, dropper, better fork and considerably lighter(13.5 vs 14.9kg). Trek would be my favorite.

also looks nicer imo.

Thanks for the replies. Hard to tell without riding an actual bike I guess. The Trek prob will be sold by the time the Slade Comp is available in bike shops. It also has a dropper post btw, but apparently the fork isnt great, any experience with the XCM coil forks?

I'd say the Trek is a bit better spec'd if it does come with the Manitou fork. That vs the one one the Slade comp is ideal breaker for me. It wouldn't be long before you were looking to replace it. Both look like a load of fun. I've loved the Slade since they were released and the geo / spec on the model up (the trail) is very good. If you can scrape a bit more together then the Slade Trail would be my pick as it comes with a Revelation fork, Stans Flow rims, better groupset, 140mm travel and more of a 'custom build' vibe where they have cleverly picked the whole package. For me it's light years over the comp version.

Bike Addict have them on special at R19K but it's not always easy to stretch a budget. I'm sure Slade is on the horizon for me after I almost bought one a couple of months back but then I'm a sucker for a rowdy hardtail.

If it is down to those two and your budget is your budget then I'd say the Trek. The Slade has a slacker head angle angle but it's not a deal breaker as it's not always a better thing for all round riding. The Trek tyres are also pretty good so you won't need to chuck them away first time you ride them so that's R1600 you could have put to the Trail.

If you're looking at the Treks on Bike Market they have had a lot coming and going in the last 6+ months. I looked at those and the Slade at the same time but the Bike Market guys were pretty inflexible on the price and the shipping costs so I didn't go any further with them.

Thanks T-Bob, much appreciate the input. Yes the Slade Trail is quite a stretch for the budget but also a much better package, agreed. I started at 8K ???? budget so no more stretching for me. The Manitou fork is really nice, although it was just ridden in the parking lot. I asked for a slightly better deal on the Trek, as shipping pushes it up again, waiting to see what they come back with.

You won’t go far wrong on that Trek. I borrowed a friends one while my dual sus was stuck in customs and had a blast on it. I was quite sad when I had to give it back.
