The Merida 120 you mentioned is probably one of the best value for money bikes new at the moment. Perfect all rounder and good components and suspension for the money.

 

Don't be worried about a 2x11 setup, not everything these days needs 12 speed cassettes and the 2x can be converted to 1x with a new chain ring for little money. My riding buddy has a Merida 120 and has also just converted it to 1x, new 1x shimano chain ring cost all of R450 and he is very happy with it.

If my memory serves me correct, the 2013 Sparks had a tendency to crack on the chain stay. Scott battled to keep up with the warranty claims. Maybe this one has a replacement triangle. It's worth asking.
