First MTB Helmet

There are many good helmets priced at under R1000.

And they are safe !!!

Higher price does not equal better quality.

Just make sure it has an ANSI certification sticker.

What is important is PROPER FIT.

Also make sure it is comfortable.

Don't let fashion catch you!!

Thank you very much. I sometimes still think more expensive is better but luckily there's people like you and the rest of the people that replied to help me out.

Thanks for the certification abbreviation, will definitely make a note of it.

I crashed a few weeks flying down a single track and wiped out, I flew over my handlebars and hit my head on rocks. My helmet cracked from the impact which it is designed to do. It was a R700 helmet that probably saved my life. Saying that I’ve realised how important a good helmet is so I bought a good quality helmet with MIPS that fits me extremely well...Just a tip... Cycle Lab was selling the helmet for R1500, I actually managed to haggle them down using their online chat and got it for R1000...

Moral of the story, you can probably get away with a good cheap helmet but I would get the best helmet I can afford.

As soon as you go above the entry level helmets they are all decent and will serve you well. As the price goes up the helmets get lighter, they ventilate better and MAY be more comfortable.

That being said, I broke a helmet during a silly crash and got concussed. Three weeks before the headaches went away, and then lockdown struck so I spent a long time off the bike in the end. At least my noggin had time to recover.

I am pretty sure that if I had a MIPS (or similar) equipped helmet I wouldn't have been concussed, or the degree of concussion would be less. It's impossible to tell, but there was a head rotation element involved in the crash.

I now ride in a Leatt helmet, as I like their Turbine tech.

So my suggestion is to go for the cheapest helmet that has MIPS/360 turbine that feels comfortable on YOUR head.

For me the important factor is size and ventilation. I still remember my first decent helmet, couldn't believe the difference in cooling me down on hot rides. I have realized we are actually paying for air holes

So in the end I got one of the Marvel helmets for R399.00. Im fine with the helmet for now as I needed one urgently because my son wanted me to ride with him.

The helmet fits well and I forget its there when riding which is a good thing.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, at least now I can start looking at other helmets without a rush if needs be.

I would pop past a Specialised shop, massive range, the below is on special with MIPS for R690.

Bought one of these lids last Friday and must say that I've owned quite a few helmets but the Align lid fits so well that i may even buy another as a spare. The are exceptionally well fitted light helmets with lots of vents for ventilation. Also the strap is quite adjustable so the perfect fit is always achieved. Thumbs up to the Align.
