and the importance of wearing a helmet!!!!

from ap

ANCHORAGE - A 14-year-old girl riding in a mountain bike race was attacked in the dark of night by a bear Sunday and severely injured, but she was able to make a brief emergency cell phone call that eventually resulted in her rescue.

The girl suffered head, neck, torso and leg wounds. She underwent surgery and was in critical condition Sunday afternoon at Providence Alaska Medical Center?police said the girl was fortunate to be wearing a bike helmet because the bear had bitten her head.

Read about that yesterday. Hectic for sure.

Talk about timing with that other rider passing just as the phone rang. You might think that it's a race and somebody else would've heard. However, 60 people turning up at a 24hr race is a small field. Even with 220 riders that we've seen at races in the Cape, it gets so quiet at night between 1-5am that at times there'll be several minutes gap between riders. It very likely that noone would've heard it.

It's funny that we never even give something like this a thought around here in Darkest Africa. It seems to be more of an issue in the US and Canada.

Last year just before I went over, as in two weeks before I left, I read a news article reporting that a rider had been chased by a cougar down the trail at the top of the 'MUST do' list of trails that SARA gave me....greeeeaaat!

No....I know specifically of two incidents in California. 1st one a solo male rider was actually killed. In another, two woman were attacked. The one that got mauled survived when the other woman pulled her unconscious body away from the cougar as it was getting ready for lunch.

This was in Whistler. This cougar was shot about a week after the rider had been chased. It was seen stalking golfers on a course on the edge of town and authorities were called in and shot it.

The reason for it getting that close to town was apparently that they'd had a very heavy snow season resulting in a shortage of food for the cougars and bears due to the snow taking longer to melt. As a result they weren't staying higher up the mountains as is normal.

That sounds like playing moer-en-soek (that's what I do on a golf course) in Phalaborwa.  While playing our caddies told us to get in the little car and go, quick quick.  Nice proud of lions had just walked onto the green we were gonna tee off to.  At least the 19th was VERY safe.
