Cuts in road tyres-how to fix?

Here's one for the roadies:

Has anyone got a way to repair road tyres with cuts from glass, etc?

I have had some success with superglue. I deflate the tyre slightly and put superglue in the cut, allow it to set for a day or so then reinflate.

I have also used an empty Gu sachet inside the tyre as a get-home repair after riding over a piece of sharp metal.

Obviously it's best to replace the tyre, but this sucks when it happens to a brand new expensive tyre.

Depending on the size of the hole you can glue a piece of old tube inside or use one of those black patches. The black patch works very well. If the cut is in the side wall then I would suggest replacing it. Keep the old tyre and repair it if possible and keep it for use on your IDT if you have one Speed Devil2008-07-02 03:31:22

Cut a piece of handlebar tape to size of the cut and stick it on the inside of the tyre. Its also stretchable with the tyre. works fine.

But wouldnt trust a cut tyre at high speeds.

Not sure about road sidewalls but I have repaired succesfully MTB sidewall cuts with Dental floss and one of those black patches on the inside, that even with tubeless ......

Deflate tyre, superglue the cut and press the cut together. It should set very quickly. On the inside, use the cheap old redish patch strips. Make pretty much like you're patching a tube, but on the inside of the casing.

Some good ideas, thanks. My main worry is the cut leading to tyre failure at high speed. It's always a trade-off between being safe and saving money it seems. I don't take chances if it's on the sidewall, but if it's on the outer surface I try to repair where I can.

I have found that the reddish patch is a bit thin and when you inflate your tyre to high pressures it pushes the patch through the hole and makes a bubble on the outside.

Something that doesn't flex would probably work better. Use the glue/solution to stick something in there. All in all, nothing should of a 2cm gash should cause you to bin a tyre.

Noticed after I had chosen it! Oops! Been trying to organise a personalised one but file sizes too big!

Maybe my Gu sachet fix was the answer then! Those things are tough and not flexible.

I've heard some guys talking about using Q-Bond to fix cuts. Its is expensive but still cheaper than replacing the tyre. desmondalie2008-07-02 06:27:48

Okay guys, just to let you know that the best super glue for the money you obtain from your hobby shop. It's called Cyno bond and cost about R30-R45 a bottle. The stuff easely lasts a year. You can even forget to close it and it will not dry up immediately.
