why cycling coverage should be better

I love watching pro cycling.

but it leaves so much out on the table.

 

Remember when MvdP won Amstel gold? Where he basically chased down the breakaway on his own for ~10km and  JAP and fuglsang started playing dice after the kite he reeled them in and then blew everyone who had been hanging onto his wheel.

 

I'd still like to see that final 10km with MvdP side by side with some data on what was going on.

 

The TV coverage was ok. we missed so much of what was happening. Cycling is a sport that has little battles all over the field, and there is so much to see - we are at the mercy of an editorial team who are in a caravan somewhere and have to make decisions on the fly.

 

Currently the America's Cup is on down in Auckland it is free to air on youtube, with 5 yes FIVE live streams. You can have it on the TV with your laptop open next to you with the data/alternate views.

 

there are sailing geeks, just like bike geeks.

imagine this sort of coverage for the sprints. i'd like to see the final km of who is going where, get some speed/power graphics. surely the NTT nerds can do this already

 

 

instead we STILL have the cameraman zooming into the motorbike speedometer to show how fast the okes are going downhill.

2000 to 2007 I was at home during the Tour de France periods, and could watch the full broadcast.

 

 

The presenters were very good at explaining the 2-wheeled-chess game to people like myself.

 

 

Seeing the "full picture" it becomes awe inspiring.

much like formula 1 (or most motor racing). If you just watch the highlights or the odd race here or there you have no context to the race, no insite to the teams or drivers and then it just looks like some noisy cars going around in circles. 

 

I'm convinced the highlights package is what has been the detriment to the TV coverage of most of these sports.

 

 

Lets take an odd one here, Curling. On the surface it looks like a stupid sport. But during the winter Olympics we had it on the TV in the dealership and got into it, to the point where the entire salestaff would gather around the TV when curling was on.

Why ?

Because they showed entire matches and explained many points of the sport, we became invested (figuratively) in the outcome.

NTT got all the info from riders already

the really expensive bit is getting the choppers and motorbikes giving multiple video feeds - they already have this.

 

BUT,

what i don't really know is how the tv coverage packages cost. i assume supersport got them for rather cheap because they would air it all. for AC it is essentially free to air..
