Hello Hubbers

Might be a bit of a Hail Mary, but does anyone know where I can get a shim for a 1" steerer tube so I can use a 1 1/8" stem?

Can't seem to find one anywhere. I saw Thomson make a highly regarded one, but the local agents don't bring it in... :(

Any help would be AMAZING!

Unfortunately both of those options were a bust.

(Decathlon don't offer that shim online and its only in store in Centurion...)

Back to the drawing board...

I know he's in Cape Town, but this is exactly what Kevin Wilkinson does (he is ex-BMC, so he knows his bicycles) . He did some amazing small scale engineering for two of my restorations. (Re-engineering an old rear derailleur and making a seatpost shim.)

I have a similar issue with an old frame that I am building up, taking it to Republic Sport in Durban this weekend. Toni said he could have one or would make one for me.

I had an old roadbike once where I used one of those hard black irrigation tubes cut to size as a shim so I can fit a 'normal' stem. It actually worked brilliantly and I used it like this for more than 3 years. Never had any issues but I'm sure there's a ton of hubbers that can point out the safety issues in this.

I have my bike back with the home made shim, it looks like a piece cut from a 1.125 inch steerer tube, with a small gap cut through the length of the shim. Works great.
