From what I've read it appears that power outputs are starting to drop' date=' the implication being that the sport is becoming cleaner. If so, the riders could be riding more conseravtively, knowing that there is no loner a 'magic bullet' at the end of each day's racing![/quote']

Could well be.  A lot of banned substances are used to improve recovery.  Longer recovery times mean that you can't train as often as before, which means you can't achieve the same fitness peaks as before.

That's what many people who describe somebody on the juice as loafing on the beach don 't understand; they normally train harder than anyone else because of the reduced recovery time. Even EPO allows you to train with more intensity for longer.

Yip, PED's are generally used to raise your genetic potential.  If you haven't trained hard enough to reach your genetic potential, then PED's will not be as effective.  You still got to train hard!!

If he's weight is 75kg he's power to weight for the TT would be 5watts per kg.Would that not be very low for a euro pro??

He's ftp would also be 5.33 watts per kg.

To be able to do that after 3 days of riding 5 hours at over 300w' date=' that is the difference.

The numbers do seem to be quite achievable, what amazes me is their ability to produce them day after day for such long periods of time.

Main GC contenders are in the vacinity of 6w/kg.

When Landis won, he was 68kg and FTP 400w - so 5.88w/kg.
[/quote']

The real top trainers have all the Pro values and 5.33 is about the norm. Millar was going flatout and did 396Watts at 77kg.

The pro's will not be averaging 300watts each day, far from that. Only once in a tour stage on a break will a rider avg around 270-280 Watts. The avg for tours is around the 210-240W mark.

The impressive thing is being able to ride endurance rides at 220 to 240 watts and that is what is the difference from our Pro's to them.

Our Pro's can sometimes do long 400W efforts, but need to recover at 180Watts. These guys can do 380W efforts and recover at 280W. Add that up and you have a far higher avg power at lower HR. Very, very few SA cyclists grasp that concept....

Fascinating topic...

Although I'd have to agree that 5.33w/kg on its own seems a tad low, but taking into account they've done a fair amount of riding leading up to that, its not bad.

Those of you with PT's - what are your 5min power/weight stats?

I'm using Normalised Power numbers, so yes, if we look at Adam Hansens first five days:

Day 1: 4h43 @ NP=323w AP=254w

Day 2: 3h47 @ NP=331w AP=258w

Day 3: 5h08 @ NP=301w AP=232w

Day 4: 0h39 @ NP=375w AP=367w

Day 5: 5h29 @ NP=267w AP=193w

the numbers correlate with what you are saying.  Fitness levels have to be amazing to tolerate this kind of load.

Best I've recorded is 5.44w/kg.  So, I'd be able to hang with these guys for about 8 minutes on a 1 hour climb - eish Cry

I had a look through my files, my best for the year was 389 for 5 minutes, and I weighed about 72 then also about 5.4. Haven't seen it in a while though.
