I want to ask my sister to send me a parcel with some bike parts and a pair of cycling shoes from Italy.

If she sends it as a gift from Italy with a courier what customs implications are there when it gets here?

thanks Frosty...not sure how they would determine value on some used stuff

Used is not the issue, it's usually the new stuff that could be questioned, based on fair value. If shoes are worth R4-5k, and it's a gift, they might pick it up (if the person knows their stuff).

I arranged to get my boss' sunglasses back from the UK; he left them at our UK offices. The courier involved wanted to charge duties as they were valued at R2500 (they seemed to know the market price), even though they were used (you could see they weren't new). The amount of paperwork required to prove he was there wasn't worth the effort, and he said it was better to just pay the duties and ATV, but eventually came right with copies of flight details, passport stamped at UK Immigration, and an affidavit.

Whatever you do, try and avoid Dawn Wing couriers. Received a GCN shirt as a gift, and then the extra duties ended up costing a LOT more than the shirt, they threatened that the item will be sold at a warehouse auction bla bla bla, then instructed that the item be sent back. Long story short, a relative went to the UK on trip, and brought the said item in the luggage, with some extras, and then the only duties paid was a box choccies.

Find someone coming down to bring them, always less hassle
