Hi there Hubland

Recently moved to PTA from JHB, could anyone give me some guidance on safe(ish) routes for a road bike around the area, preferably wide emergency lanes, intersections that are reasonable to cross and decent distance. I know this is asking a lot, any guidance will be much appreciated.

Out on the Boschkop and Graham road. Lots of roadies frequent that loop.

Any chance you could send me a gpx file of this? Would be greatly appreciated.

Attached are some routes

There is a way better option for you than my original quote:

  • Come up with Solomon Mahlangu (Hans Strydom) past Waterkloof high school on your left
  • Turn right onto Delmas road (the next intersection after the Total garage).
  • Just keep straight until you hit the massive sink hole
  • Turn back

Think it will be around 60km round trip for you. If you want to increase the distance you can go through the sink hole and turn left at the four way stop. But more on that if 60km becomes too easy 😁

This road is closed to traffic due to the sink hole, it will be closed for quite a while still, I think it was estimated that it was going to take well over 18 months to fix.

I have attached some .gxp files and I have also accepted your request. I am actually a mtber so some of these routes may have some dirt sections (sorry about that).

I would not do this alone, there are a few groups that do this route (Velo, LCC, CycleLab). I have lost count of the number of times I have had to take evasive measures (ie, get off the road or a truck or bakkie could have hit me)

There's a lot of bikers being robbed by means of force at gun point in the last couple of weeks. Riding in groups are also becoming a concern as the number of riders needs to be increased.

I know it is a bit of a bother to drive out that side but the Cradle is currently probably the safest and most road-cycling friendly area in larger Pretoria. Lots of riders, proper cycling lanes and a great coffee spot for afterwards. Quick jump on the N14 from Monumentpark - about a 20min drive.
