Any bike is only as good as it's wheels.

Expect me to say otherwise? 🤣🤣

Regardless of what bike you go for, make sure you invest in strong wheels.
Wheels that come stock standard on bikes are made for the average 80kg guy who is a casual rider.

Something like Stan's Flow EX3 rims, laced to a proper set of hubs, like Hope Pro5, with double butted spokes and brass nipples are what you need, and will last you longer than your bike.

Find a decent 2nd hand bike for R25k and spend R15k on wheels.
There is nothing worse than having a bad riding experience because of equipment failure.

Trek Powerfly e-bike going for R39 900 now.

Trek has a strong marketing campaign at the moment.

I sent a link to this Powerfly add to my buddy.  He wants another in their range.

Buddy tried to get one of their advertised bikes earlier this week ...... authorised dealer in Paarl replied that Trek has no more stock of that bike (THAT DAY's add),

"We do have stock, the bikes we have we however bought prior to the special, so we cant sell them at that price"

So much for national specials and fancy add campaigns ....

My buddy is now waiting for TREK SA's response to the dealers email .....

Yes, googling it yesterday showed R39 900 at biket -- suddenly it's gone up by R10k today!

At Gearchange the 2022 model marked down to R50k is sold out, but it's still showing the 2023 model at R42k in Large only:

At what point do TREK (advertisers) realise that these no-stock adds just upset prospective clients ?

Trek Fuel Ex is for more aggressive downhill riding -- the Trek Top Fuel would be better and is a very burly bike since the 2022 models, although both have maximum weights of 136 kg  (the same as the Specialized).

It's unlikely that you'll be wanting to do serious climbing or technical stuff until you get fitter and lighter, so full suspension isn't necessary and an e-bike would certainly make the starting out more pleasant.

Hi thanks for the recommendation, I have gone for a Top Fuel 7,  it was also highly recommended by most bike shops I called, it is really a great bike, been riding it for 4 weeks now, went for a bike fit about a week ago and that has changed my riding experience. I have also worked on my fitness level and eating habits, at first pedaling was hard on my quads that I decided to join gym, and eat healthy. Fast forward, I am now down to 137kg and feel a lot fit for my bike. I have been riding mostly on the road but I plan to go mountain trails later this month.
