Hi everyone!

I am looking at getting a new (second-hand) road bike.

I have a budget of 30k-40k. What should I be looking at? Definitely a carbon frame minimum 11-speed, but in my budget, what would be the best option?

I have seen the following 3 bikes, but not sure if there is something better out there?

1. Scott Foil - Shimano Ultegra Di2 11 Speed

2. Cannondale Supersix Evo - Shimano Ultegra 11 Speed

3. Specialized S-Works Tarmac Sl6 - SRam Red 11 Speed Etap

If there is anything better that fits my budget, I would love to know!

Thanks so much!

1 and 3 are electronic groupsetsand 2 is mechanical ultegra.?

depending on age and wear of that sram red group set, i would stay away from it.. thats costly to start replacing..

same argument on the ultegra di2 but wouldnt be quite as costly..

I personally wouldn't go sram red or dura ace groupset.. im an amateur..

the Foil might be a good option.. but also where are these listed.. be better if you can link the ads and we can peruse the images etc.. there might be wheelsets in there that make a difference as well..

need more info please.👍🏻

Here is the Scott Foil Ad - https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/road-bikes/769570/scott-foil

Here is the Cannondale Ad - https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/road-bikes/772943/cannondale-supersix-evo

The Specialized S-Works I went to see in store so there is no advert for that. Bike was in mint condition.

Maybe look at the Titan Valerian Carbon Elite? R45k brand new at Bike Addict at the moment, 12 speed 105, Carbon wheels bla bla, very nice looking bike for the money

Be sure of your size ... I note that the Foil is a 56 and the Cannondale a 54.

Thank you Thomo. I was told yesterday size is dependent on the bike brand. I am 1.74m tall and was told a 54 would be fine, but so would a 56. They said rather go for the 54 and make it's bigger, rather than the 56 and try making it smaller.

Agreed. Dependent on brand and specific model.

Also dependent on the individual - height is but one measurement.

my 2 Cs. The second hand market reflects the absolute bloat and greed of the cycling industry locally.
Before i’d spend my hard earned bucks on a overpriced or overvalued bikes locally i’d rather import one from Merlin or import the parts and build my own.

for 40k you can build a pretty decent setup.  Merlin - 105DI2 (15k) perhaps source a frame on the hub and negotiate a proper price.. Even consider something like Winspace. All in all, you’d end up building something really cool, new and in budget. DM if you need any tips.

Thank you Morne, I will definitely take your advice and have a look at your suggestions.

That foil is a pass from me.. thats not in excellent condition.. looks like a rusty casset and a nasty chip/damage on the down tube near your chain rings.. 🤮

That super six gets my vote.. its stunning.!

It is dependant on many factors.. you are just entering 54 territory at 174 in my opinion.. i reckon 54 is your max especially because you are looking at “race bikes” the reach is typically longer.. im 177 and on a 54..

56 and i think you're going to be in trouble..

i would make an offer on the cannondale that leaves some cash to get a fitting as well.😉👍🏻

maybe fit before buying.. you might be a 52 depending on your other measurements and flexibility..😳

Thanks Bike Dewing, I am actually going to sit on a few bikes next week to see what size I'm most comfortable with.
