12 September 2026 | 100 Miler

Tonteldoos. A traditional Afrikaans word for a tinderbox — the small brass or copper box carried by settlers to keep their flint, steel, and tinder dry. Before matches existed, it was the only way to start a fire. You protected it with your life. Without it, there was no warmth, no light, no survival. That's where this race ends. And how you get there is entirely up to you.

Race 2 Tonteldoos 100 miler  is a 160km point-to-point race from Loskop, Gauteng to Dullstroom in the Mpumalanga highlands. Almost entirely on unmarked gravel and district roads. 2,250m of climbing. A route that crosses two provinces, climbs back out through the cold Mpumalanga morning, and finishes on a highland plateau above 2,000m. From sunrise to sunset and into the night, your gravel-grinding odyssey from Loskop to Dullstroom will be life-changing. Unspoiled scenery, open gravel roads and a tough 20-km climb to the finish on already-spent legs make this race the toughest of them all. Do you dare?

Entry costs:

Early Bird = R1 199 (until 31 May 2025)

Normal Price = R1 450

Solo entries only. No pairs or teams.

Whoever enters this one thinking its a 100miler will get a lekker surprise 😁. Very confusing write up, first they talk about Loskop to Dullstroom (which I agree will be a 100miler) but then it starts talking about Cullinan to Dullstroom.

Race 2 Tonteldoos 100 miler  is a 160km point-to-point overnight gravel race from Loskop, Gauteng to Dullstroom in the Mpumalanga highlands. Almost entirely on unmarked gravel and district roads. 3,200m of climbing. A route that crosses two provinces, drops into the Loskop Dam bushveld, climbs back out through the cold Mpumalanga night, and finishes on a highland plateau above 2,000m. Few questions:

1. Is the start at Loskop or Cullinan - there is a discrepancy? I assume it is Loskop as from Cullinan it is 255km.

2. Same with the ascent - from Loskop it is about 550m less.

3. Loskop to Tondeloos via Stoffberg is around 130km - where is the extra distance?

4. Is the race on 12 or 19 September - also discrepancy in the text?

5. I also assume this is not the return of the Cullinan - Tonteldoos night ride under a different name and start point being a 100 miler and not 255km?

Personal observation - the week of 10 - 17 September is the Go2Sea ride / race to which many have already committed, if this event is on 19 September than entries might be diluted, it is to close and not sufficient time to recover.

Starting a point to point ride / race so far from away PTA / JHB will also present logistical challenges for us living in JHB / PTA.

The old Cullinan - Tonteldoos ride / race was very popular due to it being a night ride and the start point just outside of PTA.
