Use a shifting spanner. Job-specific tools are great but I prefer generic tools. I've fixed a couple of disks using just a shifting spanner. I don't even take the wheel out of the bike' date=' but you do need a stand so you canj spin the wheel and look at the disk head-on.

I am with JB on this one. The disk is mechanical and a little savvy and patients get this running perfectly true. My blades were out of kilter from day one. So much so that the wheel couldn't run a complete rotation without rubbing at least twice. The shifting (Vrystaat no 13) worked perfectly. Problem with the stove method is that it stuffs the tempering of the blade. And I know there are going to be some wise cracks about the blade's tempering, but it was done with a reason and I personally rate brakes as safety devices. You don't tamper with the design.

Cut cut cut

A shifting spanner may work but it does not have enough reach. The designed tool has one long slot that reaches the bottom of the disk at the hub' date=' the metal is also contoured that way to reach as deep as possible. The disk is sometimes bent deep down and the tool will fix that without bending the disk at the wrong place.

Hendrik, I agree that a shifting spanner is not optimum, but I've not yet had a disk I couldn't fix with the shifting. I've adopted a technique where I never attempt to bend the disk right at the end of the tool (shifting or otherwise). I try and feather the bend over a greater distance. I have seen people use disk-specific tools and still mess up the disk because they try and bend locally instead of over a spread area. I can do this quite nicely with a shifting. You can bend the disk deep into its spider if you maneuver the leverage slightly.

I'm not sure if I'm lucid on this, but try and imagine what I'm saying.

As for the silly banter by some guys in the tech forum, as again seen here, I wish you guys would move it over to chit-chat. I find it particularly purile when you okes giggle at each and every mention of nipple, tool and goodness knows what else.

Stop it, it contributes nothing to Tech and only serves to clutter each and every topic with crap.

PS - I've tried to edit the strange formatting a few times to no avail. Please pardon the repeated paragraphs.
