Chainring trouble - quick fix, anyone?

Removed the bubblewrap (from the Argus) the other day from my roadbike, dusted it, & rode the OFM. Noticed that the gears would not change from the big chainring to the smaller one. (It was fine on the Argus; I just never used the bike in the meantime.)

Totally forgot about it .... & now it's too late to try get space at a cycleshop to get it fixed Unhappy

Will need the smaller chainring on Sunday for the hill next to my house.

Any suggestions about things that i can try to fix this myself??

As jy in Pretoria is kan jy dit na my toe bring, dan sal ek dit kan fix.  Ek is more die hele middag tuis.  Gaan juis my fiets fix.

Anders as jy 'n DIY is:  vat bietjie Chain Lube en squit so bitjeiop die kabels.  As jy van daai draai goedjies by die shifters het twist hulle tot hy in die rat ingaan.

PM my maar as jy nie reg kom nie.

otherwise you'll have to do the race on the big chainring. will make them muscles grow!

no, Legend, that will never do! i was in the small chainring all the way on the OFM - even on the freeway with the wind in my back ... i'm a mountainbiker and need all the granny-gears that i can lay my feet on!

Hi Cat-i,

If it's Shimano you can go to their website and get the documentation on how to adjust the d?railleur.

Otherwise, take a screw driver and adjust the screws on the d?railleur (usually the inner screw and usually anti-clockwise for changing down - but I suggest you get the documentation)

Don't turn more than a quarter turn at a time, if you do you can adjust it too much which will result in the chain popping off (which just sucks!)

Change up and down with the lever while turning the pedals until it changes to the small ring. If it doesn't turn the screw again...

Before I knew what I was doing I'd just turn either screw different directions until I had a smooth bike... But I don't advise that method!

If I make no sense, I'm sorry, I tried my best

Seeing that you need a woman's advice, here goes.

Firts of all if it doesn't want to change from the one chainring to the other, it is problem with the derailleur, not the chainring. It could be have been bent on the way home from the Argus or something.

The best would be te try and reset your derailleur from scratch and see what happens. If it doesn't work, you will have to ride with only one chainring sunday.

If you know how to do it, it is not difficuilt, but a little long to explain here. Get a decent book on do it yourself bikefixing, maybe it will help.

fixed!

the cables rusted inside the housing. Chain lubed un-rusted it. And if it gets stuck during the rae, I'll know which cable to pull to make it come unstuck.

thanx for all the help!
