what a grap, they have a fake singer, digital fireworks, 52 ethnic groups represented by two majority groups and now this. so what if the girl is 14, as for being more flexible as being a advantage.... how much more flexible do they want! no one cares, true it might be a rule, but a very arbitary one at it.

Power-to-weight ratio is key in gymnastics. Younger girls have a higher power-to-weight ratio. Not that arbitrary, especially when you're the silver medallist... Same as doping really. It's dishonesty in sport.

SI.com: Why is there an age limit in gymnastics?

Swift: It was instituted primarily for the mental health of the athletes. Being 14 and having those Olympic or world championship expectations put on you is unreasonable and very difficult. There's also the question of the physical health of the athletes because their bones are still growing ...

I sat at a table in a restaurant next to the Spanish female gymnastics team in Atlanta 1996. Their coach was ordering for them. He ordered nothing but salads for them and a real meal for himself. None of them were smiling. I felt awkward the whole time.

Oh and at the same restaurant, Goran Ivanisevic was sitting near us. All seemed fine until he stood up and shouted at his waiter in broken English "This is shocking service! Do you want me to show you how to serve?"

Okay, second one's not entirely true. He was at the same restaurant though.

I agree with you Sean that the rules were probably broken and that should/would lead to disqualification if proven. the age limits in gymnastics were not set because of power / weight advantage that would the same as disqualifying Miguel Endurain for having above average long capacity, it was purely based on athletes in the USSR / central asia being pushed to breaking point at a stupidly young age, backed with physiologic problems that might be prevelant if pushed that hard at such a young age. as for being arbitary, I stick to it, it has changed nothing, those athletes are still being pounded at the same rate from four, five years old, so if a rule doesn't change the problem you were aiming to solve, whats the point of the rule then....  arbitary. Nadia Comaneci, 14 years old, first ever to get perfect 10.... six times in one Olympics, should we rather give those medals to the silver medalist that was two years older......

Unfortunately we are not just talking about mental and physical problems for these under aged athletes, there are some pretty scary stories about selection from ultra young and possible genetic manipulation as well. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It is well known that the East Germans, former Eastern Block, Chinese and North Korean types gave certain hormones to their athletes in the past, especially female, to prevent puberty, especially in gymnastics. Check it out.

Also there was an article on pezcyclingnews recently where some researchers were able to look at a bunch of these athletes from the former communist countries (first ever study) among the problems were deformities to their children, mental illness and something like 25% suicide rate.

no doubt have always been a problem will always be in countries where nationalist pride does not have a price. but a simple rule such as sixteen or nothing will never stop the above mentioned, not in countries where your entire life history and existance can be altered by a keystroke.
