I think people just take it off for the ahhhhhh effect.Walking may be the same speed as riding, but you still have to get off your bike and more difficult get back on on a steep section and this costs time. Slow is slow Once it's rideable again everyoe starts going at the same speed. 29x34 is as close as dammit a reduction as 22x28.29x 32 is smaller than 22x24.so ineffect you only lose the granny gear which is actually a crutch for not being fit.
