Sascoc, undertook to pay athletes R1m for a gold medal, R500 000 for a silver medal and R250 000 for a bronze medal. In 2000 & 2008 this was paid this was paid to the athletes, but not in 2004 ? Luckily they only had to fork out 500k this time smiley8.gif

Hear this one : The National Lottery promised Swimming South Africa R2.8m last year to help them with the preparations for the recent Olympic Games in Beijing, but they did not see a single cent of the promised money. Probably using it for Shabir's medical bill !

What went wrong at the olympics, nothing.  (we had unreasonably high expectations).  What went wrong before the olympics- lots and lots.

Sport in South Africa is in a general mess.  Why?  well adminstrators for one.  we have lots and lots of people wanting to be administrators for what they CAN GET OUT OF THE POST.  like first class travel, ext.  I have yet to be involved in one sport (except maybe chess) where adminstrators are not accused of feathering their nests and ego's out of sport funds.  In some cases this is just an accusation, in others it is rampant.  Good administrators will travel, live eat, ext with or like the athletes (or even in lesser standards)  Sport is about the athlete not the administrator.

The sport industry.  There are many calls to run sport like a business.  Some have been very good and have done just that.  That is why entry fees are so much, why there are more vets tours than elite tours, why there are no development leagues ext.  THere is no depth in sport in RSA because depth comes from getting youth participation, and sorry parents don't pay stacks of money to see junoir lose.

The school system.  Sport at school is no longer compulsory, and in some schools it id not even optional anymore.  No school teacher coaches that provide FREE coaching to the school teams.  So no youth to develop and no new coaches coming into the sport.

Society's perception of success.  Parents want junoir to win, and not just partake.  so when junior does not win, parents quit and junior looks for a new "activity" ie xbox.  we breeding a nation of quitters.

Politics.  Remember rabbits don't swim.............

Like your summary KF. I was hoping that South Africa will follow in Britains footsteps and use a "huge" chunk of the Lottery money for the next olympics and also bring back almost 20 gold medals, but alas, after this artical that the National Lottery doesn't pay up I don't know what we are going to do.

Its a story about AA at a school.  THE school was the rabbit and duck school.  Every year it would win the running race and the swimming race.  THat was until an ANC sport teacher took over and insisted that the teams should be representative of the learner body.  So, rabbits were then included into the swimming team and ducks in the running team.  For the next five years the school had five drownings, and twenty foot injuries and won no competetion either.

Maybe those who like to play the lottery should play the UK lottery.  At least the money does go to sport and in the unlikely event of you winning the lottery, you could win BIG in pounds smiley2.gif
