These wheels are inferior, I aggree 100%!

If a customer wants to spend money with knowledge that these are money eating wheels and the parts used are the same it came out with (the same thing will repeat itself) and keep me busy I dont mind..

Before I start the repair I tell them what possible problems could be on the way and cost envolved and mention the name EASTON 10-20 times before I start.Wink

Had a good look at my rims last nite, no sign of cracking or bulging.

Mercx, seems like you will have some work to do before year end.WinkLOL

JB, even the tools you buy/get (I had to buy mine, as I got the wheels second hand) is sh*te. Tried ONCE to tighten that one loose spoke, and promptly stripped the tool used for it. Luckily I bought (got three) of those "star jobbies", but is too afraid to use the other ones, less they also strip.

Lesson learned/deduction made?  That spoke has already seized in the nipple. Guess it is time for the trusty old vicegrip to come out when I replace that spoke. (it does come as a unit, the spoke and nipple, does it not?)

Where can I get the spokes for these wheels? What is the SRP?

spokes for the Ksyrium wheel costs about R120per spoke.

Soon I will needto replace al of them thanks to corrosion.

I can't turn any of the spokes so If i buckle a wheel, they are finished.

now 44 x 120 = R5280-00

I can get a new set of 2006 Ksyriums for the R100 more. I'll stillbe stuck with the problem.

I can get lighter and more durable hand built wheels for less...

If you have Ksyriums and need to get them repaired, why not break up the good bits and sell the rest as spare parts?

Is this thread refering particularly to Ksyriums or would a similar wheel such as a Crossmax SL have the same problem? Never had problems and they seem to be well received with good reviews.

Crossmax has the same problem. There however, because MTB take a lot of abuse, the spokes do not have the opportunity to seize due to galling.

The freehub is really pooo though. Expensive wheels, expensiveto maintain, notvery light and weak in the areas that count. XTR rules or handbuilts with Chris King or Shimano XTR hubs rule the roost here.

Ofcourse marketing does win over hearts and minds with loads of puffery

Can you explain this to me? Galling?Confused

OK, so the constant flexing of a mtb wheel reduces galling(seizing) of the spoke in the nipple? Is that right?

Mavic have been good at packaging and promoting their products and brand.  They were the first to package and sell their wheelset as a complete item.  Today we see packaged wheelsets as standard, but it was

not like that before.  Today it is almost seen as second best to have a wheelset built or at best seen as geeky.

They also introduced neutral support to riders way back at the Tour and do that job to this day.  What the actually do is another question!  What do those yellow Mavic support motorbikes actually do?  The riders wouldn't dream of getting a wheel from a neutral supplier these days with the specialised equipment they use so why do the Mavic bikes follow riders right up to the line?  Marketing of course and marketing sells wheelsets.  Lots and lots of glitzy Mavic wheelsets.

Don't you just want to buy a set when you this?

I did yes. My thinking process was something in the line of "could not be that bad when they do wheels in the TdF", but not for the last year+ LOL

LOL I also nearly bought a set, but luckily spoke to some bike mechanics, plus the Hub fundis also convinced me to do some digging!  The problem is most people just buy what they see the top guys ride (me included).

I prefer to learn from other people's expensive mistakes

from wiki:

Galling is a process that causes friction when metal parts like nuts and bolts are rubbed together among the high spots on the surface. The friction in turn generates heat and causes the asperities (i.e., high points) to weld together. It is not the same as cold welding, which is common in metals like steel.

Galling occurs mostly with soft metals like Aluminium, copper, tin etc.

too answer the 2nd question, yes the constant flexing reduces seizing but not necessarily the galling. BEcause the surfaces are moving there is opportunity for the fine metallic material formed by galling to be removed from the contact area reducing the possibility of seizing. The seizing happens when the metallic dust/particles/call it what you want/ oxidises and makes finer dust that packs into cavities and creates a mechanicl lock sort of like mud drying around your spokes at Sani2C....
