Ok so im looking at getting new wheels

These are my options

XTR Wheels = 1525gr

XT Wheels = 1680gr

Mavic Crossmax SLR = 1525gr

Now are the XTR wheels worth the extra money for only a 155gr saving????

Also are the Crossmax`s that much better? (I like the Bling Factor)

Would like the Candy Bros Cobalt wheels but they new on the market and very very expensive so they out....

Also thought of DT swiss but cant get them that easily....

I ride Crossmax's.

I know there has been a lot of negative comments on the hub about these wheels lately but I havent had any problems as yet. These wheels have worked hard and still run well.

I have a bent spoke and torn nipple which if it wasnt a blade would have been replaced by now. I bought the bike used and it came with an XT skewer at the back and it took me forever to get a Mavic one. I just wanted it original.

Would I get them again? I have no personal reason to say no but based on the backup I get between my Mavic and Shimano parts I think I would give the Shimanos a very good look.

After reading Johan's comments I would stick to Shimano. I have XT hubs with DT Swiss rims and they are great.

IMHO that weight saving on a MTB is not huge and unless you are a real race snake you probably wont feel a massive difference.

So I dont think its worth the extra cost but if you are a weight weenie and you have the cash???

I'll defer to JB on that one. My guess is the lighter the wheel the less durable. He does rate the XTR wheelbuild highly.

JB's quote:

"Shimano's new wheels are designed the right way. I had the opportunity to dismantle an XTR wheel and boy, have they got it right."

XTR vs XT is basically a matter of budget. The XTR uses a titanium freehub aluminium axle, and boron hardened cups for the balls to run on. The hub body should outlast an XT.

Both are labyrinth sealed so run virtually frictionless.

The major difference is the rim material. XTR uses a Scandium enhanced rim over the 7000 series AL alloy rim of XT.

The XTR should have a higher fatigue life and be stiffer than the XT Rim.

The XT rim has obvious cost advantages. So unless you are heavy or ride wel enough to tell the difference, the XT will serve you long and well.

I mean XT groupset is more durable than XTR are the wheels the same???

Why do you say this...? Just wondering

Had a look on http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?modelID=20794, the XT wheels are very well priced at around R3000 (my lbs quoted me R4500), add XT rotors for another R400.

The XTR wheelset works out at around R5500 (at above website), which is not bad at all, considering the performance and durability.

The Mavic Crossmax SLR is about R8000 (also at above website), the lbs quoted me R11000 for them. Yikes! Looks very nice though, so if you have the money, why not? Mavic Crossmax SL seems to be a better deal though.

Personally I'll be ordering the XT wheels soon, to complement the Anthem that Haga is building for me as we type. Very excited!

Well the wheels will be going on my anthem so if I get XT I will have a full XT bike.... But maybe the XTR is the better buy??? I weigh 73kgs is it worth the R2500 extra????
