160mm VS 180mm

Will going to a bigger rotor give me more power and modulation??

 

This is my problem when hitting the technical stuff going downhill my fingers get sore from holding the brakes (Ya I know dont hold the brakes) but sometimes I have to in the very very technical stuff..

 

So basically will going 180mm reduce the force needed by my fingers to slow the bike down???As the bike seems to roll....

 

So I want to be able to use less pressure and control my rolling forward movement more...

Yes 180mm will give you more power but wher is the problem exactly. Does the bike still roll when you apply the brakes? Then you should look at the pads or maybe re-blead the brakes. The Juicy 3s with 160mm rotors on that RM you're taking can throw you over the bars if you are not carefull.

Well I went over my bars at FPC with my XT calipers and 160mm rotors but I want a smoother, stronger breaking force when going slowly....

 

MY bike stops when breaking but I dont think they great when trying to keep a constant slow speed

Have you tried playing with the pad adjustment screws? They move the pads closer so you do not need to pull the lever too far. It's not the reach adjustment barrels but the little screws on top.

Yeah I have..... Could it be that I overheat a 160mm rotor???I mean I think im only doing like 50m slow tech at a time and I doubt they get that hot???

I don't know what happens if you overheat the rotors but you can overheat the calipers and fluid and then you will actually lose grip.

hmmm..... ok so we still stuck to is it worth upgrading to a 180mm than stick with a 160mm....

 

I just want to be able to control my slower speed more...

I have no problem with my XTs and 160mm. Maybe try organic pads. They don't have that much bite apparently but don't last as long.

I have 2008 XT's with 180 up front and 160 out back. Love them!

 

I weigh in at 100kg and I get all the control I need with one finger on the brakes (sometimes 2 when things get really hairy).

 

The weak point in the whole braking system is still the traction your tyres get on the ground. The strongest brakes in the world are useless if your tyres dont stick...

Splat Agreed and thats why I ate dirt at FPC as I had just put on new different tyres.... I think I will go the 180mm route now thanks

I ride a bike with 160 front and back as well one with a 160 rear and 180 front. I must say that for 'normal' XC type racing I don't notice any difference at all.

 

Have done some pretty long downhill stuff on the brakes and not had any issues on either bike. Having said all of that I am not a big 'front braker' per se as I am maybe a bit to chicken to go over the bars. Do however use it to slow the bike down quickly before obstacles/corners. Once I'm in the technical stuff I am extremely careful of the front but don't mind klapping the rear brake when necessary.

 

Must say that on my Julies (160/180) I do sometimes notice that my fingers get a bit 'stiff' through technical stuff ......... seems better on my Juicy 7's.

 

Probably haven't helped much but that's my humble opinion Wink
