I?m looking for some info. I?m looking for Magura Louise 5.1 Performance or 5.2 Endurance brake pads to fit a 2008 Merida HFS 3000. I?m struggling to find them in <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Cape Town. The bike shops in Cape Town all need to get them down from Joh but here?s the real shocker : R320 + for one wheel set so almost R650 for the bike. So my question is : Are there any generics out there that I?m not being told about and is this a reasonable amount to pay?

Hey how you doing. There are generic pads out there but the problem is that using these will compromise your warranty on the brakeset. All magura brakes come with a 5 year leakproof warranty to the original owner,so if a caliper or lever starts leaking within 5 years of purchase, it will be repaires or replaced by a new part. All magura pads are made of a softer organic compound and contain no metal, even the endurance pads. The problem with generic pads is that they mostly contain metal. This will cause your magura system to overheat during use, damaging seals and possibly boiling the fluid. We saw quite a couple of these cases at this years epic with guys running generics. We swithced their pads for originals and they had no more hassles.for the dealers to get the pads from us takes one day as we use an overnight courrier service to the shops, all they have to do is pick up the phone and order. If you have any more questions then please don't hesitate to call me on 0825702888 or our offices on 0118883700.RedRocket2008-10-08 01:52:10

I've got Magura Julie and brake pads are over R240 per set. I now need to replace the rears but I just can't find any in JHB area.

Any ideas ...........?

Red Rocket, I want to see you defend that type of prohibitive gaurantee in court. Further, I'd like to see you substantiate those claims about brake overheating.

Firstly, you'll have to prove that the pad caused the damage. I'd like to see you prove that pads caused a leak at the levers.

Secondly, you don't seem to understand how heat is generated in friction surfaces. The heat is generated in the softer of the two surfaces, at the interface. In other words, in the pad and only at the surface touching the disk. This heat comes from the stretching and breaking of the molecules in the pad material. This heat is then transferred to the best conducter of the two - the disc, where it is dissipated or absorbed.

Generics (and original equipment for that matter) may have other problems, such as poor fit etc, but none of the ones you describe.

I understand that you have to tow the company line, but rather skirt around the dodgy bits and tell your customers what great service you have, how exclusive your pads are and that the pad material was organically certified and pesticide-free. Oh, sorry, I see you did mention that.

Thanks all

I've replaced my rear brake pads with the originals and I'll wait till Chrismas for the front ones. So the bottom line is I'm going to have to pay lank for a quality product and get it from Joh. Last question - how long should these pads last during normal weekend riding as apposed to Epic riding and training (which the 1st pair went through)

Clinty, you've just been defeated by FUD.

Don't give up so easily. BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Honda, Hyundai, TATA, you name it, they all play the same game. They tell the ladies and suits who bring their cars there to service that should they use parts other than OEM parts they will die in horrible accidents, scalded by boiling brake fluid.  Yet Ferrodo and ATE seems to do well. In fact, most cars are fitted with these pads albeit in OEM guise.

Find an online retailer that can supply the Koolstop product for your brakes. Cycling needn't cost an arm and a leg and you shouldn't have to wait until Christmas for new pads.

Incidentally, if your rear pads wore out before your front ones, you're predominantly using the wrong brake. A rear brake doesn't stop much, but still eats pads. Focus on that front brake.

Thanks Johan

I phoned up the agents for koolstop as they are in Cape Town (got off internet) and they can get the pads i'm looking for but it would take a while (I did suggest taking 4 or 5 pairs) They gave me a rough estimate of R89 odd (depending on exchange rate) but compare that to R320. So my next set will come via that route. Also looked on the Magura website and they do mention that the warranty is forfeited if you don't use genuine parts. Thanks again for your help

Now that's satisfying.

I never doubted the "officialdom" of that disclaimer. Fact is, they are violating your common law rights (we have a lawyer here, you commented very nicely on the teeter-totter issue, please help out) should they attempt to void a gaurantee on a fault that has nothing to do with the after-market parts you used.

I am confident you'll never get to that situation, because Koolstop is the Ferrodo of the bicycle world, but to show a finger to anyone who makes such a claim is something that appeals to me.

Hi Johan

I'm a bit confused about this. I was always under the impression that you used your rear brakes a lot more (to slow down) and used both to stop or slow down fast. I have concentrated on the front brakes a lot lately as I didn't have any rear brakes. Please let me know if I've been misinformed.

Thanks

So Magura specify a pad that is organic and say that metal pads (or pads that have metal shavings in them) will boil the brake fluid.

I reckon they need to have a chat with Avid and learn their secret.
