I took a ride on the Braamfontein spruit this afternoon and was stopped by a guy who said two cyclists were high-jacked at about 5pm towards the N1 highway (close to the area where they are working on the highway)

Has anyone heard anything???

More! That's awful! Were they riding together or separately? I will speak to the MTB police unit guys today to get them down there asap! All details that Hog refers to are essential.

I was actually going to PM you about this. Good thinking Batman! Wink

This is a matter of great concern. Yesterday, while riding home along the Spruit, I saw three women jogging/walking alone along the spruit. One of them at least had 2 dogs with her, but the other 2 - nothing except for iPods so they can't hear what's going on around them. Disapprove

Rode the other end of the Spruit this morning and the worst thing I saw was The Thug and Jules. Wink

We need to get more details on these incidents, seems very strange that in two days at almost the same time there have been two incidents. I have a good contact at Randburg SAPS, I will ask him to check with Sandton if these cases were reported and if so what the complete details were.

Yes, the horde of muggers retreated when they saw the two of us on our 29er single speeds smiley36.gif

This reminds me that BG and I saw a troop of men walking towards us at 4:55am right across the whole road. Needless to say we did not try ride through them. Simply took a little detour.

I think most of us can outride a pedestrian attacker. Suppose if he pulls out a gun it's a different story. Just gotta be careful not to get within striking distance to anyone. And pepper spray is always a good idea. The velcro bike-mounted ones are available at Dischem for under 200 ZA ronds.

I agree that we need more details. Most of the reports I've heard have been very, very secondhand with very sketchy details. I'd like to know what the modus operandi is.

We need to know how big the gangs are, how they launch at you, how close they were at the initiation of the attack and what weapons they use.

Someone here mentioned that they take a wide berth around pedestrians and I'd say that's probably the single most important anti-jacking strategy.

I've heard one very good first-hand report from a work colleague. We all entered the 94.7 together and he parked at work in Midrand. On his way to the start he passed two pedestrians who then turned around, ran him down and tackled him off his bike. This happened on the steep part of Allandale as you approach Kyalami. A women in a 4x4 who had just dropped her husband off, saw the comotion and rammed into the scrum with lights blazing and hooter blaring. The attackers simply ran away. As far as we know, they weren't armed.

My friend said there was no opportunity for pulling a weapon of any sorts.

This means, should you pass suspicious pedestrians, you now have to look over your shoulder to see if they're turning around or not.
