Hi,

As you can see not posted for a L-O-N-G while. I recently gave up my road bike for an MTB and enjoying it very much.

Just wondering if anyone can provide some pointers or advice on maintaining the bike correctly as to prevent problems with the bike.

A friend of mine also with an MTB, who took his bike in for a service, was told that due to improper maintenance of the bike he needed to replace a number of parts, including the bottom bracket...Cry for the 2nd time.

Indeed....

I am the friend, and running repair costs on my bike so far has nearly amounted to me buying a brand new bike!!

Thing that I am scared of now is that if I buy a more expensive bike, I will pay more for repairing everything as I am not too sure on how to properly maintain my bike!

Any advice will be much appreciated!

Buy yourself a chain cleaner. Clean and lube your chain after every ride. If you use a high-pressure cleaner, don't spray it in the hubs, bb or headset. Jules2008-10-13 02:00:15

Not unless there is something wrong with it. Take the chain off the chainrings and spin your cranks. If they spin too easily or feel like they have grit in them, they might need a look.

You can also hold both pedals and pull them up and down, left and right. If there is play, there is a problem.

Yip. And make sure everything is assembled properly the first time.

Hi GL...

I currently have a GT Avalanche 2.0, and I leave my maintenance for the shops. I will fiddle here and there (because it cant be too difficult) and end up confusing myself.

When it comes to things like bottom brackets and wheel hubs (which are supposed to be sealed) I have learnt not to spray water directly into them, but it was only now after fetching my bike from the shop again.

Otherwise, everytime I wash my bike, I put some wax on the chain (Pedro's) and I spray some Shimano chain and cable spray into the moving parts of the derailleurs.

That is it in a nutshell... Big%20smile

Use wax on your chain and always keep your shocks clean.

Singletrack bike shop in Silverlakes does a great course for R300 and beer and snacks are free!
