I have been doing it for a long time with Crossmark non-tubeless tyres. Its important to note that a non-tubeless tyre  should have a "wire" inside, (not the foldable type) otherwise it can easily slide off the rim. This happened to a friend of mine taking a corner at high speed. Will not elaborate on what happened to him!

Anyone else running these wirebead Crossmark tyres tubeless?

3 years now, no issues. I always just use the wire tire

Have ordered the Stans from Bucycle (cost me about R280 with postage for 900ml, compared to the LBS R380 for 450ml! and I still have to drive 100km for it!)

Will get some 20in BMX tubes next week and try it out....hoping the compressor I use for the 4x4 will work?

So guys what are the essentials that I need for the conversion? I went to my LBS and I saw a conversion kit for R550! CRISIS thats a bit steep isn't it? Should I buy the kit, or is there a cheaper way to do it?

You can go full ghetto, or just go to your LBS and buy a pair of joes rim strips and a bottle of sealant. Strips you can get for R220 from Cajees if you negotiate, gloop you should be able to get for R50 to R100.

I used to use Ryder when I could still get it, and that was R40 for more than enough to do two wheels. Now I'm back to using Joe's until I find something water based that works.

You should try Chris Willemse...

Used to use 4x4 compressor with no probs.

Then sold the 4x4 so now use floor pump which also works fine. Just not as easy. When you start pomping, put valve at 12 o'clock and press the tyre down with your hand over the valve. Seems to make the tyre seal easier.

Thanks, its a double headed unit so I hope it works, otherwise I will fork out for a cheap small compressor. My workshop could do with one anyway!

Buycycle had a special on the Stans kit, R480 for 26in conversion.

Just be carefull with the non lust crossmark tyres, as they seem to "burp" sealant when not inflated hard enough. Had them on for a single ride, but replaced them with lust versions as the ride was just too bumpy. I ride the lust versions at much lower pressure, with no burping at all, resuting in a more comfy ride...

Non LUST ones would be the wirebead tyres? What pressure were you running them at?

Get rim tape, two tubeless valves and a bottle of Stans liquid. Gonna cost you around R400 for everything but you wont use all the tape and solution so next time it will be even cheaper to do the conversion

I had the foldable non ust versions. Not sure about the exact pressure, but the had to be VERY hard to avoid burping.

As hard as what you would have ran them with tubes?

For me my biggest problem is the cost of the proper tubeless tyres.

Probably harder than with tubes. I had stans inside the tubes with the normal non ust crossmarks and then did the tubeless conversion with new crossmark lust tires. Had no problems at all and the lust tires are very comfortable and reliable. Then replaced the lust tires with normal foldables, but they were not nearly as comfortable as the lust ones. So I would recommend buying the lust version crossmarks to enjoy the full effect of tubeless wheels.
