My friend's kid did the 94.7 kiddies ride & have changed their Xmas desire from a PSP to a mtb - which is a good thing, no?

So they went to Cajees East Rand & got the willies when looking at prices and the range of gear.

Which is the best bikeshop for kids on the East Rand is my qu. & my friend says:

<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

We are looking at the Avalance 24? junior bike for 9 year old, would this be fine for just social cycling and kids cycling challenges?

Which headgear would be most appropriate for 9 year olds, and what suggestions on other additional gear that is really necessary?

Assume we all know nothing & let me know what you think.

Thanks

Sorry Johan - I know it's not very technical but couldn't think where else to put it.

Just come from the shoppie now and there is a nice range of Scott bikes there that I am sure we could get one of the kids onto. Also a good range of helmets on special there for the kiddies

Just got my 9 year old a 24" Silverback... he loves it! It's a small progression from the Raleigh Roost which he had outgrown.  He can't get over the fact that he has gears and suspension now! It's really peaked his interest in riding Smile

Also look at the Raleigh Ridge. My son is 9 and was looking for the 24" bike, but then saw the Raleigh with a xs frame (14") and 26" wheels. Figured it will last him a lot longer, we can upgrade components alot easier and it was good value for money. Paid about R1850.00 new 6 months ago.

My son has had two Avalanche bikes (currently still on a 24") and it does what it needs to and he loves it!  I wouldn't get anything cheaper/nastier, but more expensive is a waste in my opinion.  They all weigh a ton and it's all about fun at their age.

He has done the Argus kids ride and has gone on some rides with me (he is 11 now) and it works fine.  I got him a nice Blue helmet, but he is not happy with it and wants my Bell Sweep!!!!  Little critter wants all the bling...

His bike looks like a spaceship.  Got my old bar ends, bike computer, light, bottlecage and tubby bag on.  More is better at that age!

Thanks for all this folks - what a nice thread.

My friend is really chuffed with the responses & will prolly be bending some of your ears in the not-too-distant.

Bought my son an Avalanche Cosmic 24" thee years ago when he was 6. He hammers that bike like you can't believe and it is still going strong. He builds 15" dropoffs on our driveway and pounds them all day. So good I have just bought my girl a 20" Avalanche Max based on my experience with the Cosmic.

Having said all of that, may I ask if anyone knows of a disc compatible fork for a 24". The bike is really worth upgrading as I really beleive it has a coupla years left in it.
